  1. Just to pick up on a point in your post LAboy1 (forgive me if I misunderstood), there are ~150 med students in the class of 2012 -- that is a fair number of people. Same with UofC. Now, with average ages you have to remember that it is indeed an average or median age -- I kind of wish they published a SD with the data as well to give an idea of the distribution. There are plenty of people at UofC who are 'young', and for the most part, there are a group of people in med that you'll just jive really well with. I think it'd be true UofC, UofA, wherever. Just wanted to make the point that even if UofC has higher avg ages, that you do indeed find people of all age groups in significant quantity at both schools. I think that is one of the successes of medical school admissions' systems.
  2. my major deciding factor was geography, in choosing uofa. i wanted to move out of calgary (my hometown), but wanted to stay close enough that i could visit home frequently. if geography does not matter, then i think the next bullet should be the 3yr vs 4yr program, and all the implications of that. the third is probably a function of uofc being a 3 yr program, but they put considerably greater onus on the student to learn their material -- the experience there can be what you make of it. some say you are at a disadvantage in carms when going to uofc, but year after year, they do fairly well here, so i am not too sure about that. but it is definitely more dependent on the student to make their experience better. my humble opinion, of course. ultimately, i think these are the three main, significant differences between the schools that one should weigh before deciding one of the two, (and for me, in that order of importance too).
  3. i just got in off of the waitlist. i passed it up for uofa though,so the waitlist is moving 1 space. i also received notice of how my interview went as well in the email..3rd quintile, so middle of the pack. my avg is around 95% and im oop. goodluck everyone.
  4. Hi everyone. I'm a 4th yr bcem major @ UofC, just graduated. 1st time applying to this school. Applied to: UofA, UofS, UofA, UofT, UofM, UofO Waitlisted: UofS, UofM, UofO Accepted: UofA, UofC, UofT Will be declining UofT and UofC, and attending UofA (is the current plan anyways), so the waiting list will move up one here! GPA: 3.98 pGPA: 3.98 MCAT: 12/9/12 R EC/Vol: decent amount..CALM class guest speaker on drugs, man the crisis phoneline, mentor a child, science centre, various clubs on campus, various volunteering on campus, and other things. Alot of emphasis on research, during semesters as well as during summer. Interview: Went decently I think, minus 1 or 2 questions. Essays...I was like, wtf. didn't see what exactly they wanted us to write about, so I just made (and stated) an assumption and went off of it. Worked out I suppose. I felt MMIs in UofS were alot more challenging than the MMI in UofC. Goodluck everyone! PM me if you want to know more about my experience.
  5. 4th (& final) year of BCEM degree at UofC Applied to UofT, UofA, UofC, UofO, UofS, UofM Waitlisted: UofM, UofO, UofS Accepted: UofT, UofA, UofC OMSAS GPA: 3.93 or something like that toronto GPA: ~3.96ish MCAT: 12/9/12 R EC/Vol: various initiatives on and off campus, focusing in on teaching, public speaking, and leadership. I have no volunteer experience in a hospital. Instead, I am a guest speaker in highschool and junior highschool classes about drugs, and man the crisis phonelines. I think its important to do more than follow the 'volunteer in a hospital' routine. Diversify your experience, and you'll thank yourself when it comes interview time and you're answering questions *with your life experiences*. Did other things like student government, started and led various clubs on campus, mentored, etc. Not sure where I am going, but it will likely be UofA. This was my second time applying. last year i was rejected post interview at UofA, and that was the only one I applied to. So apply to many universities and hopefully one will work out for you!!! goodluck!
  6. OOP applicant from AB (4th yr bcem major @ UofC). Waitlisted here, UofM, and UofO, accepted at UofA, UofC, UofT. GPA: probably around 94 or 95% on sask scale MCAT: 33R (12/9/12) MMI: sighs..i actually missed my flight by 2 minutes the night before the interview. So I drove all night long from calgary to sask to give my MMI. needless to say I wasnt well rested and don't think I performed great (but no killer moments either, I dont think). Will probably pass up my spot here if I get it, in favor of UofA or UofT. I applied only to UofA last year and was rejected post interview there. This year I applied to the 6 schools listed above. Goodluck everyone! Everything happens for a reason, and perseverance will pay off! Way to go HateWaiting!!!!!!
  7. Hi everyone. ppl who know me in the slightest will recognize me... I just finished my degree at UofC in biochem. cGPA: 3.9 (I love how they truncate these things..grr, they should round, not truncate) prereq: 3.99 MCAT: 12/9/12 R EC/vol: i do a fair amount on and off campus, with a focus on teaching and leadership. i really like the phonelines at crisis centres. Research: fairly active here too, with a couple of summers/semesters in it since HS Interview: this was my first interview, and probably the one that went the worst..the guys actually told me --repeatedly-- during the interview to be more concise. <shudders> atleast they told me, instead of letting me ramble around the point. my interview i felt was a little short, at around 35min, and I was kind of uncomfortable for the most part. it got better in my other interviews though. I wish everyone luck in this endeavor..I got rejected last year as a 3rd year applicant, as I only applied to UoFA and was kind of flippant about writing a good application. my advice: put alot of effort into apps, and it'll pay off. esp. the personal attributes section. its not how good you are, its how good you look that matters (for the purpose of getting into med). So I applied to UofC/UofT/UofA/UofS/UofO/UofM. I got a direct acceptance to UofC/UofT/UofA, and anticipate acceptance off the waitlist at UofM. UofO and UofS (hehe, funny story with this one. lets just say its nice that saskatchewan is only 6hrs away by driving) will most likely be rejections off of the waitlist. I think I will be in UofA, but I am gathering some info on UofT before I make a decision there.
