  1. Definitely better to deal with specialist. NB: RBC only requires the initial proof of enrolment and nothing else (used to require it annually, but got rid of that requirement last year).
  2. Yup! Though for those in Ontario, you can't separate your federal and provincial amounts, unfortunately.
  3. I work with Veena at the university nad Dundas branch, she is great and got my prime - 0.25 approved ina day over email: veena.janardhanan@rbc.com
  4. Not sure anybody has actually confirmed the prime-0.5% as available. The -0.25 is already a new thing recently so I am highly skeptical that all the big LOCs will suddenly start offering -0.5%, but one can hope!
  5. Exactly! And this is why I will likely be with RBC for quite some time. That said, my banker understands that I have no emotional attachment to my bank (as nobody should) and if I were to get an offer that saved me significantly more money from another bank and RBC would not match or beat it, I would have no qualms about switching. Indeed, I have my insurance (car, home, etc) through a different bank because RBC couldn't give me what I wanted. Still, them knowing where I stand means they will always fight to keep my business and not simply be passive and take my business for granted.
  6. Yeah long-term relationship definitely helps in this cases. Also lots of negotiating power because I am signing a new mortgage with them. I will say though, a lot of it has to do with your individual agent. I know several people with scotia or TD that had a very hard time with a lot of their LOC and other perks, but no issues once they switched to another advisor within the same bank - same with RBC.
  7. I'm with RBC and a simple email to my banker and it was switched to prime-0.25 the next day!
  8. Why? I just started with it and it seems fine. Detailed explanations for each question/topic and decent interface.
  9. Yeah that is more rare, but for other fees, if you get a student banking account with them you will get a minimum of zero fees plus a free VISA rewards card (just not avion, you have to negotiate for that). I didn't even shop around because all my banking was already with them and they gave me everything I wanted for my LOC immediately. As for interest payments, I never let our main chequing account go below about $1000 - 1500 to cover automatic bills and the interest is just taken off this each month automatically...no big deal for me.
  10. I completed this section. I do not know if it was taken into consideration, but I was not eligible for weighting and my overall cGPA was around 3.3, but with a large upward trend. I even failed a course in first year. The fact that I go in suggests that they took my explanation into consideration. I won't say the details of my explanation, but I will say that it was not some major life-altering event like a family member dying or anything like that, just the truth of what led to my failure first year.
  11. I wouldn't worry about any tiny impact of multiple credit checks on your account, especially at this point. By the time you need another significant credit (i.e. buying a house in residency or beyond), those credit checks will not be a factor at all.
  12. I am with RBC which gives 250K up front, but for the second part, yes it is pretty common for them to ask you to close some accounts (particularly if they are large) or have that amount come off your LOC. For example, I had about 5 credits cards (none with balances) with several limits >$10K, 1 personal LOC at $10K and a joint LOC at $15K. I closed all the LOCs (the new one is a MUCH lower interest rate anyway), canceled 2 of the credits cards that I never use anyway, and they were fine giving me the $250K.
  13. It can be...when people say they aren't the highest paid, it's usually because they are comparing billing from the government. However, many have significant private streams of income from cosmetic procedures that are not included in these billings numbers (same goes for derm). A busy cosmetic derm or plastics practice will make way more than the highest paid government-billing rads/neurosurg/and even ophtho.
