  1. I'd say (and maybe others will correct me) that you should postpone graduation, and do a 5th year if you are serious about med. Try and get 3.8 or better in those two years. That will give you a shot at Western, Queens, Dal, and Ottawa, and some others, assuming your MCAT goes well.
  2. I worked full time when I wrote it. Most people I know did too. But lots of people do take some time off. Up to you.
  3. Accepted at Dal. I am OOP. 3.9 last two years, 36P MCAT. Interviewed at Calgary, Western, and had one coming up at Mac. I'll be accepting Dal.
  4. Does anyone know if there are any stats available on how many people meet the GPA cutoffs but are rejected pre-interview by Ottawa? I meet the GPA cutoffs (assuming they don't go up), but it seems like some people with great EC's don't even get an interview. Also, worth applying to Mac with an 11 VR and 3.62? I guess I probably already know the answer: ace CASP and maaaaaaybe have a shot.
  5. You've probably got a great shot at Toronto and Ottawa. McMaster is also a good bet, but it depends largely on how you do on CASP. Northern depends more on your background (where you have lived/worked) than your GPA, so I can't comment on that. Western and Queen's are unfortunately almost definitely out because of your writing sample mark. I'm in the same boat, so I feel your pain. However, if you can afford to throw away the application fee, and feel like praying for a miracle, neither of them has a supplementary application, so you can still go for it.... (Queen's will be Q or R though and western will be P or Q). As for Calgary, I don't feel like doing the math, but it seems likely that you would get a full file review. After that, it's anyone's guess, but GPA is a huge part of it and yours is awesome.
  6. Last two years GPA: 3.9 wGPA (Ottawa): 3.86 aGPA (Manitoba): 4.15 cGPA: 3.62-3.65, somewhere thereabouts. MCAT: 13/11/12 (36P) List of schools I'm going to apply to: Manitoba, Calgary, Western, Ottawa, Mac, Dal Ontario resident, non-SWOMEN, not in the Ottawa region. I'd appreciate any suggestions/comments on my choices. Is there anywhere that is a pipe dream and anywhere else I should add?
  7. Thanks, and thanks for the info. I guess with Manitoba, the MCAT is huuuuuge. Hopefully Wednesday goes well!
  8. Even for OOP? Sorry, just with my gpa in my first couple years I'm always I in disbelief when I find a school I might actually have a shot at!
  9. Yea I've taken 4 biochem courses, and had a mark of A in each. Any idea what those GPA/MCAT cutoffs were in previous years? I'll get my MCAT results on September 7th, but in the meantime, is my GPA even competitive enough for Manitoba to warrant consideration? And yes, that's exactly what I got. Thanks for double-checking!
  10. Ok guys, I've posted elsewhere, but this seems to be the place for this post. Thanks in advance for your patience, this is a dumb question, I've just done the calculations myself and it almost seems too good to be true. I'm trying to figure out my AGPA. My first two years are not full course loads, as I bounced around programs. Last three years are. 5 year totals: 11 A+ 25 A 4 B+ 1 B 2 B- 3 C+ 1 C Total of 47 courses. Everything below B+ was concentrated in those first two years (thank God for Western, Queen's, etc.) but those years didn't have full course loads. If my math is right, and Manitoba doesn't care about my quasi-part time status in years 1 and 2, I am eligible to have 30 credit hours dropped?!?! 10 courses?!?! Leaving me with one lonely B+ and then the rest all A and A+? Also, if somebody could let me know what the % weightings are for MCAT/GPA/ECs pre-interview that would be fantastic. Thanks! I'm OOP by the way...
  11. The way I see it (and maybe I'm wrong, somebody correct me please): -a fifth year of undergrad, even with say a 3.92, wouldn't help me much. My GPA is so low because of my 1st year in business, and then the 1st year of my BSc, so even a stellar 5th year would just get me to maybe 3.7 overall (not great). -since my last two years are so strong, I've essentially restricted myself to Ottawa (wGPA would be 3.85-3.87 depending on how this year wraps up), and Queen's, Western, and Dal, since they only look at the last two years (or the best two, in Western's case). -If I improve my VR score, Western and Queen's are viable options, and if I become a maritime resident (say, after grad school, or taking a year off to work, or by convincing them with some personal reasons I won't get into here) then Dal could be a viable option too. I'm assuming that even though I meet cutoffs for Dal, I wouldn't really be that competitive as an OOP. Any major flaws in my logic here? This, to me, seems to point to trying to up VR this summer, and applying to the aforementionned schools in the fall. Seems a shame to re-write an otherwise decent MCAT...
  12. Thanks for the prompt replies. My only worry with starting a Masters now is that most MD programs require you to complete it before you can start med. So if I start one this year, I couldn't apply in this cycle. The way I see it, I can re-write the MCAT, and try this cycle. If I fail, I do a masters. So I either get in this year, or wait 3 years. Or I just start the masters now, and don't apply this cycle, and hopefully get in in 2 years. I guess a 3rd option is to do a 5th year of undegrad (actually it would be kind of a 6th given my situation) to boost my GPA, but I just don't like the idea of taking a full course-load, and paying a full year's tuition, which would basically be pointless and filled with bird-courses. Wouldn't that seem pretty transparent, and be frowned upon, from an admissions office point of view?
