  3. Interesting! I wonder if the enhanced skills aka plus one programs in FM would count as a third year for this? I’m hoping to do care of the elderly. Just curious! Thanks for the info!
  4. Just to go back a few posts about FM jobs in the US - are all the USMLEs required and/or is it state dependent? Thanks!
  5. Hi Belle,

Congrats on making it this far. Been reading your threads thus far and I would love to seek your guidance.

So I'm a new grad RN who is interested in going to medical school. I've always been passionate about medicine from a very young age and I like to admit that I don't see myself doing nursing for the rest of my life.

My nursing degree was collaborative meaning 2 years in College and 2 years in University. My  GPA in the last 2 years is around 3.93-3.94. Scored only As and A+s.

In terms of ECs, I've done peer mentoring, peer tutoring, was a Course Rep for mental health and pediatrics.

Research? did some health promotion projects here and there but nothing on publication.

Future plans? I'm planning to work fulltime for 1 year before applying

Questions: What are some ECs that I can engage in that will help me build up my application?

Wanted to write only the CAR section for the mcat but also contemplating to write all sections to give myself a chance to get into Queens. What are your thoughts on that?

    Any general advice?

    Thank you!

  6. Congrats, that's so great to get that good news after all you've been through! I'm very happy for you!!
  7. Thanks everyone!!! Liz30 it wasn't always easy to stay focused; had many days where I second guessed myself and thought about quitting. But I knew I wanted it and I believed in myself, I think that was the biggest thing, just believing I could do this if I kept going. And it worked out! . And thanks Birdy! So happy for you too!!!
  8. Hi guys! I have wanted to post in this very thread for 5 years now and I am SO happy that I can finally do that today. My journey started in 2010, I was a student in the 2nd entry nursing program at UOttawa (before that I had done a psych degree, not all full-time years). While I was a student I became very interested in medicine and decided to take a chance and study for the MCAT in the summer before going into 4th year. At that time, I had never taken sciences beyond grade 11 chemistry and bio....I did prep classes but ultimately I bombed the MCAT, especially the physical sciences section (I mean BOMBED!! haha). So no surprise there I was rejected pre-interview at the 2 schools I applied to. I really had no clue what I was doing and how competitive this process is, or what it took to actually have a shot at interviewing. This forum was a huge wake up call for me! At that point, I put medicine on the back-burner and focused on finishing nursing and ended up getting my dream nursing job. After working as a nurse for 2 years, I still kept thinking about medicine. I started studying for the MCAT once again, but was still struggling, especially with the sciences. I became very discouraged and started to explore my options. Ultimately, I was pretty certain I was never going to ace the MCAT, but I knew I could ace university courses and get myself a stellar GPA if I wanted to...so I set my sights on Ottawa U and choose the path that was most realistic for me. I knew it was very limiting only applying to one school and putting all my eggs in 1 basket, but for me it made the most sense. But another roadblock - my nursing degree was not considered full time by Ottawa U, so I would have to go back to school yet again for another degree (my 3rd undergrad degree! yikes!). I had one full-time year from my psych studies, with an OK GPA (3.7)....so my goal was to go back full-time, get straight As to boost my GPA, and at the same time get lots of great experiences to add to my application. I left a full time permanent nursing job to take a huge pay cut in a part-time research job, and also took 2 casual nursing jobs - all so I could pay the bills (barely!) and chase this dream. It wasn't easy but I made it work - balanced my studies with 3 jobs and multiple volunteer and extracurricular activities. With a lot of hard work I finished those 2 years with a 3.98 GPA and I was in a good position to apply to UOttawa. But another hurdle I had to jump were the dreaded science prereqs - I barely passed chemistry in high school and was so afraid of taking these courses. This past year I completed all 6 science prereqs and got myself an amazing tutor, who helped me get As in those classes! I was ecstatic this year just to receive an interview from Ottawa U. Many people on this forum reviewed my application for me and gave me so much valuable feedback!! I prepped like crazy for the interview and felt it went really well. May 12th came around and I was waitlisted - yes I was disappointed, but I knew just getting the interview meant I was on the right track. Yesterday I was feeling pretty down and was prepping myself for the reality that I would likely have to apply again this summer. And then this morning happened! I received the email that I was off the wailist and offered admission into Ottawa U! I still can't believe this happened to me! My story is not the most exciting I know, but I hope it inspires other non-trads like me - you don't have to ace the MCAT or be a science genius to get into medical school. You have to choose the path that is right for you and the most realistic. It is definitely more limiting, but it's not impossible if you put everything you have into it! Thank you to everyone on here who has helped me along the way!
  9. Accepted off the wait list June 2 at 11:40 am WGPA 3.928 ECs - strong (multiple nursing and research jobs, pubs/posters, president of student wellness club, therapy dog training and volunteering, women's center volunteer etc) Interview - left feeling that I nailed it but then thought I could have said more and elaborated on a few questions. Overall felt very confident about it. Good luck to everyone still on the list and can't wait to meet everyone!!!
  10. Time Stamp: May 12, 7:54 AM Result: "Good" Waitlisted Location: Ottawa wGPA: 3.93 Stream: English Interview: thought it went really well! Sigh...
  11. Like everyone else, just wondering about my chances! Applied only to Ottawa U this year, as my science courses are in progress and want to hold off on the MCAT until I am finished. WGPA: 3.92-3.93 (it's 3.928 - so maybe rounded to 3,93??) ECs, fairly strong I think: working as Clinical public health nurse for nearly 4 years, Clinical research assistant x 2 years, nursing instructor x 2 years, awards for community building/leadership/research, president of student health and wellness club, therapy dog trainer/volunteer, recreation volunteer with older adults living with dementia, poster presentations/published abstract etc... Thanks for your opinions! So anxious for January 31!
  12. I did a second entry BScN program at U of O and absolutely loved it...lots of people say its hard to achieve high grades in nursing but if you work hard then you absolutely can - plus if you can't excel in nursing I would question your ability to excel in medicine. I worked hard and finished with a 3.96 gpa overall so it can be done. It's also great to have the career option afterward. But beware - many schools won't accept a nursing degree as they don't consider it full-time studies (bc of pass/fail clinicals). Be sure which schools you want to apply to before you make the decision to go into nursing. I am back doing yet another degree because of this very problem...but I have no regrets! GOOD LUCK!!
  13. This is all very inspiring!! Congrats to everyone who had been accepted so far!! The rest of us just need to keep persevering and sooner or later we will be posting our success stories too! Any other nurses out there applying this year? It will be my second time writing the MCAT and applying!! Good luck to everyone else applying this year!
