  1. That could be a good idea actually. Maybe that should be someone's summer project to organize one? haha
  2. Hey all, I'm looking into housing in the south end area for the fall and was looking for some input. Has anyone lived in Garden Park apartments and if so, what are some of the pros and cons? Link below. Thanks! https://www.killamproperties.com/apartments/halifax-ns/garden-park
  3. PEI Applicant GPA: 3.7 (MHSc in progress) MCAT: 31 EC's: varsity athlete and captain, conferences/pubs (1 first author, four on the way), HELP program, cancer clinic, lots of research etc. As of this morning I was put on the waitlist. I will be most likely declining my waitlist position as I have been accepted by Dal and they are my first choice! Good luck to all
  4. PEI Applicant: BSc Hons Biology (St. FX): 3.6 MHSc (Lakehead): 3.9 MCAT: 31 EC's: Cancer Clinic volunteer, HELP program, varsity athlete and captain, graduate assistant, bunch of research stuff.....and more but i don't feel like typing because I want to CELEBRATEEEEEEE :D ACCEPTED TO DAL!!!!
  5. Hey folks, Need an opinion for my applications submitted this cycle on the east coast (Dal and Mun, already had interviews at both and first time applicant). GPA: 3.7 MCAT: 31 (VR 10, PS 9, BS 12) Education: BSc. (Honours Biology), MHSc. (Epidemiology specialization, second year, should be done in a few months) EC's: -National level varsity cross country/track (6 years, top 10 in Canada a few times) -Cancer Clinic volunteer (200 hours so far) -Hospital Elder Life Program volunteer (100 hours, in progress) -Assistant Editor- Journal on Developmental Disabilities (year and a half) -Elementary school track instructor (1 year) -Nursing home volunteer (1 year) -Science councillor (undergrad) -President of two active societies during undergrad (pre-med and red cross) -Varsity council (2 years) -L'Arche (1 year) -Volunteer adult tutor (2 years) -Physician shadowing (50 hours) -Plus a bunch more stuff both academic and community based. Research: -Graduate research scholar (1 year) -Graduate assistantship (2 years) -Honours thesis -Lab volunteer in undergrad (300 hours) -First author publication -Five conferences (2 oral, 3 poster, 4 more in the next few months) Awards: -Male athlete of the year -Track and XC MVP (x 6) -Ontario graduate scholarship -Major departmental research scholarship -Academic all-canadiana (x3) -Most outstanding graduating bio student (undergrad) -National and Atlantic award for community service, athletics and academics (x2) -Bunch more athletic and the standard entrance type stuff for both BSc and MHSc. Overall I feel my application was pretty solid and I have all the bases covered. Would love to hear where I could improve should I not get in this cycle. Thanks!
  6. I've been using an interview coach for the past two months or so and have done a total of 6 sessions (roughly once every two weeks). All the sessions are one on one for an hour and for three sessions it cost roughly 270$. Overall I couldn't be happier about the process and the instructions he has given me. He sets out a process that works, explains the benefits of a good intro/conclusion and most of all works on your "voice", or your verbal cues. Like what everyone else has said though, these sessions should only compliment your preparation in my opinion. Whether that is watching WCBA, reading ethical books or practicing on your own or with others, the sessions in my mind are to really fine tune your skills. You can also think of it in terms of dollars and cents. You spend at least 500$ on MCAT prep (books, courses, the test itself and travel) and the test itself is worth 10-20% depending on the school. THEN you have the interview. Worth 30-45% across the boards (or around there) and most people spend little to none on the interview prep. Although its not required, taking a course sure wouldn't hurt! Here is the guy I used. Great reviews from friends and about 70% of the people he helps get in (maybe just a coincidence though!): http://bluedolphintraining.com
  7. PEI Resident Applying to Dalhousie, Memorial, OMSAS potentially Undergrad: completed, BSc. Honours Biology (St. FX University) Masters: in progress to be completed May 2015, Master of Health Science with epidemiology specialization (Lakehead University) Undergrad GPA Calculation: DAL: 3.6 MUN: ??? Not totally sure Masters GPA: Thesis-based MCAT: 9PS/10VR/12BS (31), went from 26 ® ==> 31 Extracurriculars: National level variety athlete and captain (XC/track), cancer clinic volunteer, HELP hospital volunteer, president of pre-med/Red cross societies, science councillor, l'ARCHE, volunteer tutor for elderly, physician shadowing (plastic & reconstructive surgeon), Camp Triumph councillor, bunch more that I don't feel like mentioning haha. Quite a variety Research: undergrad thesis + summer of research, one year GA for prof, completing second GA now, 2 international conferences (one oral one poster), 1 national conference (oral), a couple travel grants, one paper submitted as first author with at least 2 more this year coming, editor on a national journal, Awards: OGS masters award, male athlete of the year, national award for running/volunteering/school, athletic scholarships (x5), MVP of XC/Track team, award for most outstanding graduating student in biology, and more random scholarships. Essays: Had help from profs, friends and family plus some current med students. Tried to be honest and really separate myself based on my activities/accomplishments. Random: Great references overall...I think....haha Realistically my best shot is at DAL based on how they assess GPA and my competitive MCAT score. Lots of connection to Halifax and the area (Mom did PT there in 80's). I'll get an interview based on my MCAT/GPA so I've been practicing extensively for the interview with a professional coach and friends. If anyone could provide me an opinion that would be great! Any chance to improve is worth it.
