  1. Well Family Medicine is so broad and diverse. This all depends on your own personal career goals, which you may not know yet as a preclerk. I can say off the bat though that Urban Toronto and Urban BC programs are generally the most competitive because many people want to be in Toronto or Vancouver.
  2. Were your family members MDs as well? Also would you have loved working on people's teeth all day? With family medicine, the world's your oyster. You can have a practice focused solely on Botox or hair transplants, and make a lot of easy money.
  3. That's a pretty broad question. What do you want to know specifically about EM residency?
  4. It's not reflective of what the actual MCCQE is like. I agree with the previous poster that Canada Q-Bank is garbage. When I was studying for the MCCQE, I actually had purchased a subscription to both U-World and Q-Bank and found that Q-Bank was the biggest waste of money ever. There interface was also terrible. I used U-World almost exclusively.
  5. I used Toronto Notes and UWorld. I also quickly scanned the objectives here: http://apps.mcc.ca/Objectives_Online/objectives.pl?lang=english&loc=contents I applied and matched to a generalist specialty, and so I felt comfortable with most concepts.
  6. I did light reading here and there for 2 weeks followed by daily (full-days) for 2 weeks. I think it was more than enough, maybe even over-kill. I also wrote the MCCQE on the first day that you could write it. Better to get it done and out of the way. I didn't understand my friends who wanted to study an extra 2 weeks. The exam, as you will see, is very ambiguous, like the questions are poorly worded. It's nothing like the USMLE. Basically, more studying isn't going to help.
  7. No, but I don't think this experience will be looked upon any more favorably than other local experiences, like volunteering at an inner city clinic. In other words, if I was reviewing applications for admissions, I would not give this medical student more brownie points or gold stars just because they shadowed a bunch of doctors in a developing nation.
  8. That is not true. There are many people who go through the FRCPC program and choose not to be involved in academia/research. There are even grads who choose to work full-time in community ERs, away from the academic/tertiary centres. There are also many people who go through the CCFP-EM route and become full-time involved in research/academia.
  9. That is not true anymore. Many community ERs are now requiring CCFP-EM / FRCPC training. As the job market becomes saturated in certain areas and some FRCPC choosing not to work in academic/tertiary centres, you will see more and more of them at community sites. Maybe if you want to work in a small town with just one small hospital/ER, sure you can get away with not doing additional training.
  10. I forgot about Mac, lol. But ditto future_doc, you won't know until you try.
  11. Ottawa - You have a near perfect GPA and balanced ECs. Toronto - Same as above. Queens - You should try because their cut-offs vary from year to year, so who knows, perhaps your 9VR might be sufficient. UWO - Are you from the SWOMEN area? I think their MCAT cutoffs are lower if you're a resident of that area? Basically, you want to apply as broadly as possible. It's an additional $75 to apply to each school, and you won't know until you try. Good luck!
  12. I was just offered a position at uOttawa. I will most likely be declining my position here at Manitoba. Good luck to those on the waitlist!
  13. Oh wow! That's a solid MCAT score. I just based it off the mean for the class of 2013, which was 11.72. Perhaps your ECs and LORs?
  14. Your MCAT seems to be above average for Manitoba (assuming you did decent in writing as well). Also, Manitoba doesn't require a full course load - you just need to meet a few specific course requirements. Give Manitoba a shot.
  15. That's a pretty solid MCAT score. Did you apply to Canadian schools?
