  1. Hi @gottawannit, I noticed your previous post about the MPH in Global Health at UofA. I didn't know they conducted interviews as part of the application process. Would you be able to provide more information about this? (e.g.- how long was it, was it over the phone, anything you wish you would have known/prepared for, etc) I am hoping to complete this program!

    Thanks

no worries! yeah, so the GH stream has a phone interview (I believe in April). It's always on the phone, regardless of where you are. I was literally in ECHA like 2 doors down when they called me. It's very brief. I think mine was like 12 minutes or so.

They ask a few generic questions like "why are you interested in global health", "why UofA", blah blah blah. I think the biggest thing they're looking for is an understanding of the mindset that goes into global health. For example, i think a lot of people rank lower on their interview because they mistake global health with tropical medicine. Global health isn't just infectious disease in africa. It's looking at "western" diseases like diabetes or hyptertension in underserved areas, like northern canada, or homeless populations in metropolitan cities. Of course, the bulk of underserved areas are in places like subsaharan africa, and that can be where your interests lie (as do mine), but you have to at least recognize that you can practice global health in somewhere like Edmonton or Toronto.

i would HIGHLY recommend the program. It was a stepping stone for some of my greatest experiences in life (practicum in kenya, med school, strong network with profs/researchers) and the UofA program has great comraderie - for example, profs refuse to be called Dr. Whatever; everyone is on a first name basis.

I don't really have anything I wish i would have known before for the interview. They WILL ask you if you ever plan on doing research in the future. If so, you should pursue the MSc in Public Health program because the MPH is meant to get you in the work force ASAP. This is a big deal for them - every year kids get knocked out of the running because they try to sound well rounded by saying they are willing to do reserach but that is NOT the point of the MPH program. Similarly, they WILL ask you where you see yourself in 5 years, so have an idea of what sort of stuff you're interested in and how the MPH program will help you get there.

hopefully that helps! let me know if you have any more questions - i'm always happy to talk global health!

  2. similar to what Fullmoon mentioned, are things like Orientation and whatnot mandatory? for those of us that live further away and may struggle to up and move so quickly there may be a few weeks of missed class. Secondly, i'd love to hear someone touch on any travel opportunities! I noticed in the curriculum theres a solid 4-week span for electives - I imagine you could elect to do those elsewhere, which is awesome. Is this the only time for extended travel? This is my biggest fear in choosing UofC (other than that it's a clearcut winner for me), every year I save up my pennies from part-time work during the year so I can travel for a few months of every summer and would hate to not be able to do that anymore.
  3. Pho. Pho is the answer. Coincidentally, it is also the cure for the savage hangover you'll have the morning after your interview.
  4. there's currently a dope ice castle thing going on in hawrelak park - very reminiscent of Narnia. Would recommend
  5. Result: Reject wGPA: 3.57 MCAT: 11PS/11VR/10BS ECs: lots. enough to get me an interview last year with a 3.27 GPA. leading health development team through rural africa (3000+hours), 2 undergraduate theses, 1 publication in international journal, owning my own business, competed on international level sports Year: 5th yr UG Geography : IP Pretty chapped to not get interview this year considering my GPA and EC's have all increased since last year where I actually received an interview.
  6. Alright y'all, it's getting tiresome trying to figure what's considered competitive vs. what the cutoffs are for all these schools so I'm hoping one of you all-stars can give me a no BS answer on my chances Alberta resident and did all my uni here. GPAs: 1st - 3.01 2nd - 3.29 3rd - 3.49 4th - 3.94 For all the ontario students out there, keep in mind that the above GPAs will be considered a wee bit lower since OMSAS considers A to be 3.9 and A+ to be 4.0 whereas out west we don't differentiate. I suppose there is also the consideration that some school(s) let you drop the worst and noobiest grade every year, which would give a slight boost....anyways, I'm thinking aloud. Or akeyboard. MCAT PS/VR/BS 11/11/10 and 12/10/10 (my most recent, which I believe is what some Ontario schools look at...?) I am taking a 5th year to finish up my undergrad and I am anticipating it should be 3.9+. Gotta love those victory laps! As for ECs, I think I they're pretty solid. They got me an interview in Calgary last year even though my calculated GPA was in the bottom 2% (however, it was my only interview). Anyways, I'm putting my future in your hands, let me know where I even stand a chance! Thanks in advance for the infinite wisdom!
