  1. I'm a second year medical student who is looking for some first/second/third hand information! I went to a couple banks today to ask about student lines of credit and they were practically jumping out of their seats to sign me up for 350k each. I seem to remember this being talked about somewhere on the form, but I can't remember. Anyway, what's stopping me from going in one day and snagging 2 lines of credit on the same day? When you have this much money on hand, why not go big in Vegas!?? OR buy a rental property. It looks like mortage rates are lower than LOC rates? Has anyone on here used their lines of credit to buy a rental property?
  2. Global academic assessment doesn't care about the specific degree you are doing. They just want to make sure that you are taking courses that are applicable to your degree and year. When I was in my third year, I took a first year wrestling course - easiest A+ of my life. HOWEVER, UofC did not think it was a very impressive A+ haha, if it had been a third year bio or chemistry class that was relevant to my degree, they would have been a lot more impressed. Or a third year business class if you are in business, etc.
  3. Seems like a good chance. It's all about how you wrote your top 10. However... did you not even try on the other sections? Haven't heard of someone not trying at all. Some people with low 120s in the other sections. As long as you meet their minimum requirements you stand a good shot at getting an interview.
  4. Result: ACCEPTED OFF THE WAITLIST!!! Time Stamp: 4:32pm Geography: IP GPA: 3.86 MCAT: 512, CARS 128 Degree: General Bachelor of Science, major in biology and minor in chemistry. Graduated last year and have just been working this year. ECs: Above average from last years rejection stats. Firefighting, volunteering on a sailboat, working with youth at my church, chemistry research, laboratory assistant at a bee diagnostic centre, etc. Interview: I felt like I crushed it compared to last year. Last year I got rattled after the first station and ended up getting 12th percentile. This year, I stayed happy and positive the whole interview. My answers didn't always have the greatest depth, but I tried to implement some humour into them and keep them upbeat. Moral of the story.. there's hope for you people who bombed your interview this time round! Keep practicing, and try to find people that can give you honest feedback. After getting rejected from UofA twice and UofC once, getting off the waitlist today has me truly humbled. I've been praying for this moment for the last 5 years and it's finally arrived. It's safe to say I'll be accepting my offer (sorry other waitlisters). I've never cried so many happy tears in my entire life! Goodbye bone-crushing disappointment, and hello Calgary!
  5. Hi guys! I'm looking for some help in determining which schools I should apply to. I am an Alberta resident. I applied to UofA and UofC last year and interviewed at both schools and made it onto the UofA waitlist. However my GPA dropped to a 3.86 this year. On the 4.0 Scale here are my grades: 1st year 3.94 2nd 3.91 3rd 3.59 4th 3.72 So I got a solid downword trend.. haha, I broke up with my fiancé in 3rd year (should I mention that in my med school application to explain a lower GPA?) 4th year I have no excuse lol. MCAT is a 506 (126/127/127/126) however I'm rewriting in August and I can see myself getting a 510-12 (CARS maaaybe will go up to 128) ECs: Camp counselor 4 years. Youth Leader 4 years. 8 month missions trip (5months were on a sailboat where we helped people in hard to reach areas). Volunteer firefighter/first responder 3 years. Labouratory assistant in a Bee Diagnostics Centre (4 months) Research assistant for Engineering and Chemistry department at UofA (4 months for the summer, then for the whole school for a research course). So I don't want to waste a bunch of money and time applying to every Canadian medical school if it's not realistic for me to get in. Should I just apply to UofA and UofC again, or are there any other schools that I might have a chance at? Thanks for any help you might have! - T
