I know it doesnt really matter which undergrad you go to for med school but which health sci program is better and is "easier" How is the program structure at western and ottawa and which one is better to get a higher GPA in. What are all the pros and cons i hope some current students are able to answer :)

Hi to folks on the forum, I've been quite entrenched in the search for my future occupation for a while now. I find mental health very interesting and currently have very broad plans to become a psychiatrist. I've most definitely been influenced by people like Dr. K from HealthyGamerGG and my own search in healing my trauma. I hope I can get up off my ass sometime and read some books on cPTSD. A little about my academics; I'm currently in 10th Grade and have advanced one grade level in a few academic courses. As I stand currently, I may be able to increase my workload by a fair amount next year and graduate early. My grades are not bad. I currently have a 99.x% in Mathematics 11 (with a final exam left !!!), but my school's grades and BC's grades in general tend to be inflated. I'm a little weaker in the English and Socials department, though. Moving to Alberta next year will give me a nice reality check with their diploma exam and the increased workload I'd face. It would, honestly, be good preparation for the work I'd have to do in university to get that sweet >3.8. I also have questions concerning undergraduate programs and different schools but that'll be for later. I've considered some of the potential consequences of graduating early. hs and uni experience - I miss out on grad day memories with hs friends, etc., but I'll be moving at the end of this year anyway and losing them all. I don't think I'm going to be one to drink and party with friends at university too much. I am unbothered by the fact that I'll be under legal age for many activities. I think I'll be able to socialize with people a year above me just fine. hs courses and AP classes - Completing 11/12 courses in one year would mean I'd probably be able to take only Calculus. AP Chemistry / Biology would be off the table, as I'd need the additional year for that. miscellaneous: I wouldn't say my maturity is terrible, but I would be lying if I didn't say I am most worried about writing essays and doing well in interviews more than getting a high GPA. You can probably tell that my writing is not up to par. However, I'm of the opinion that age does not define maturity and rather experience does. Hopefully I can put in the work to improve my verbal communication and writing further. My question is: would it be worth for me to graduate early? Since I'd be taking many of the prerequisite courses med school adcoms will be looking at in first year uni, would not taking AP Chemistry / Biology or even possibly Calculus put me at a disadvantage? I do feel that the extra year would have it's own upsides, though. If I get a shitty MCAT result first/second go, it would be no hurry. I have one extra year. Speaking of admissions, would adcoms be skeptical of me, since I would be very young against the general applicant pool? Thanks. Hope I didn't come off as too pretentious / having PMS. On a side note, this forum has been great to read through. I'll continue to read and incessantly worry about events in the far future.

Hello everyone I need help choosing a university that will offer me better opportunities for grad schools. I'm hearing so much different things from everywhere, so I thought i'd ask here. I was wondering which program/university of these would be better for med school in terms of networking, opportunities (research/volunteer/clubs), gpa? They both seem to have their pros and cons, but I am stuck between them. Thank you so much, in advance! ---- Both will cost the same for me in the long run and I'm going to have to get some part-time jobs near the universities to help me pay for tuition and bus fees. General: do researchers care about which university you go to when you apply to do research with them? (i.e. is prestige worth something?) ----- uOttawa: -health science seems to be helpful in terms of the gpa aspect -biomed seems to fill more prerequisites -i need to know more because not many people talk about it—why? UofT life sciences: -utsc: smaller class sizes but smaller campus and not all courses would be here, but seems to be better for high gpa than utsg -utsg: more opportunities than utsc -overall hard (but aren’t all universities hard? So how does this difficulty compare to mcmaster for example? Are the profs purposefully making tests harder, do they not teach well so the self learn is getting to people, is curving down a thing?) -
So I’m currently a grade 12 bc student with offers for both ubc and uofc for kinesiology. I am wondering if moving to Calgary for undergrad is worth the albertan in province status in the future. but tbh I would prefer going to ubc much more because I already know a lot of older friends in the program that could give me advice and guide me through the program. Would it still be worth moving? Another thing that I could possibly do is transfer to Calgary after my 2nd year. any thoughts on what I should do would be very helpful. im also not dead set on medicine, I would also consider doing dentistry or physio

Currently a grade 12 student in Vancouver BC. I’ve applied to Calgary, Toronto and UBC for kin. I’ve been accepted to both Calgary and Toronto but am still waiting for UBC. But at this point I feel like my chances of getting into UBC are pretty slim even though it’s my first choice as admissions is ending soon. My goal is to get into med school one day and I’m hoping for some advice as to which program would give me a better chance to achieve my goal. -
Hello Everyone/Salut tout le monde! I am a Quebec university student who is graduating from undergrad this semester. I’m planning on applying to a DESS (Diplôme d’études supérieures spécialisées) program at Université de Montréal before applying to Medicine and Pharmacy next application cycle. Let's cut to the chase: I’m wondering if being part of a DESS program will significantly hurt my chances of being accepted to the Quebec Medical schools, compared to a full-on Masters degree. Pros to the DESS (in my opinion): DESS programs are only 1 year of full time study, and many of them offer doing an additional year of directed study or a stage somewhere. Upon completing the additional year, I would graduate with a full Masters degree. Research isn’t really my favourite, and I would prefer to do a more application-based program, but not if it will hurt my chances, or not improve my chances, at getting into Med/Pharm . Cons to the DESS (possibly?): When I apply during the next application cycle, they will see that I have been working on a DESS instead of a Masters degree (not sure if this one counts as a Con or not, that's why I'm asking here!). I haven’t seen this discussed anywhere else, so if anyone has anecdotes or feedback of any kind to share about this situation, I would really appreciate them! -

Hi, I am currently a grade 12 student in high school. I have a very strong work ethic and currently have an average in the 90s. I am not too concerned with the major, as long as I am able to maintain a high GPA and have all the requirements necessary to go to medical school post-undergrad. If anyone goes to Guelph or Queens University and has a close to 4.0 GPA, or is currently in medical school and did your undergrad at either, would you recommend it there? If so: 1) What program were you in? 2) How were the professors there? Were any of them unfair? 3) Did you live on res? - if yes, was it too noisy to concentrate on your work? Any help/advice would be very appreciated!!

Hey guys, just wanted to ask a question here for a friend. My former classmate is currently in a BioMedical program at Western and wants to transfer into a chemical engineering program (to which he has been accepted) at a different university. His end goal is still to apply to medical school but he feels like his skills (and marks) would shine more in that program and finds his current program to be an uncomfortable fit. So I guess the question is will medical schools frown upon switching from a “premed” degree to something that’s completely unrelated? I understand that they don’t care about your undergrad given some people may want to change careers but I feel a little uneasy for him as he is transferring from a biology degree to something unrelated not the other way around. Will this show indecision or lack of interest for the field? I’m spitballing here but just want to know if there should be any concern to what he is planning to do. I know applications are examined under a microscope and I’m guessing this could be a red flag? Appreciate any input. Cheers -

Hi, I'm still in high school and I'm looking at which "premed" program to apply to next year that focuses on preparing students for medicine. I know that any program is good as long as you can get a good GPA and high MCAT scores, but are they any specific programs (in Canada) that gear specifically towards premed? Thanks in advance!

Hi there, I'm in a unique academic situation ... A couple of years ago when I attended Ontario Tech University (formally known as UOIT), I had some low grades permanently removed from my academic record (I know it sounds improbable, but it's true; special circumstances permitted it). My cGPA increased after it was recalculated and then I transferred to Laurier where I am finishing my undergrad. My question is... since I had grades wiped from my record, would those grades by any chance show up when my cGPA is calculated by medical school admissions? The removed classes no longer appear on my official transcript but some of them were prereq classes for the upper year courses that still remain. Would admissions look at the specific classes or just the grades? Because I don't want them to think my transcript was doctored in anyway.

My GPA's not stellar but my MCAT and ECs are decent. What would be my chances to get into med school in Ontario? I'm in Life Sciences at McMaster. Would taking a masters be a good idea? And if so, which degree should I be thinking about? First yr: 3.3 Second yr: 3.87 Third yr: 4.0 MCAT: 525 ECs: Hospital shadowing, exec position for Doctors without Borders, Global Medical Brigades, research, design reviewing for devices for patients with disabilities, multiple awards for social justice debates and research competitions Any advice would be appreciated. Hi y'all First time poster on the forum here! I've recently developed a passion for medicine from working with a buddy at my local hospital for a few months and am looking to give the career a shot. I'm currently in my first year of studying agriculture (B.Sc) which has a lot of biology and chemistry courses that I throughly enjoy. Since I am looking to go down this path, I've decided to switch programs (and university for a non-related reason). I understand that "traditional" undergraduate study is a 4 year degree; but how will the process be different for someone like me looking to switch programs in their first (or maybe second) year? Will medical schools look at my first (or maybe second) year or only focus on my new 4 year degree? Also, I'm a little confused on how transfer credits work and how they will contribute to my new degree. My marks aren't stellar since I was not planning to attend graduate school, but it's not terrible and is enough for me to transfer into my desired program. Any advice or input is greatly appreciated Thanks in advance guys!

Hello, I am applying to university soon and I would like to stay in Toronto as much as possible. For all my life, I have always been considering the traditional route of taking Life sciences to go to Med school, but my options have opened ever since I started to play the harp. I am graduating from the IB program and I want to avoid workload stress however, I do understand that taking music as a major will require a lot of my time, I heard, double the amount as normal undergrads do. Despite that, I also play music as a form of de-stressing and I go to it when I don't want to study. I also heard that there are a lot of advantages with being a music major, with it improving your likelihood in getting into university because of uniqueness, dexterity, reflectivity etc. I want to become a coroner so I definitely have to take Med school. I'm not actual sure how university works with all the majors, minors, specialists, degrees etc. So considering that I want to have the minimum amount of stress while still having the required courses for Med school, what would be the best options for me? Major in music and take bio courses during summer school? (yikes) Take Life sciences and somehow find a way to do music (um?) or are there any options? If I take music as a major, would I have to take a gap year before I get into med school? Thank you so much! -

Hey guys! I recently got into both mac health sci and western med sci with scholars electives. Obviously my end goal is med school and I know most people say mac is the safer bet but I just wanted to see if anyone had any more advice for choosing between the two programs. I like both the programs and I'm mostly considering western because I liked the campus, the atmosphere, and the guaranteed research opportunity. However mac health sci I've heard also has an amazing and supportive community. Idk I think I'm leaning towards mac, but ya lemme know your opinions!! -
Hi all, I received my offer of acceptance at Western MedSci back in December and didn’t really consider Mac ArtSci + Health Sci considering their competitive nature. Though I got rejected from Health Sci, I recently got accepted at ArtSci. I was wondering if there was anybody currently in the ArtSci program who could speak on their experience or anybody currently in medical school that have graduated from ArtSci. Would ArtSci be a good program as a pre-med? I was planning on combining it with Biochem but I am still slightly worried. MedSci is a lot more specialized (overwhelmingly so) and I’m worried about maintaining a high GPA in a program that appears to want students to fail. Can anyone speak on this? So confused about what to do! Any guidance would be greatly, GREATLY appreciated! Thank you so much !

Hi! I'm wondering if anybody has gotten accepted with having just taken 4 courses a semester through their undergrad? Wondering if I need to do some semesters or years with 5 courses a semester to "prove" that I can or if that isn't necessary?
