  1. Hello there. I am a first year enriched health student in Dawson College, I am trying to get into Med because of my passion for the domain. I want to get advice regarding Cegep in general and the path after it, my grades are fine until now, but not as high as I want because I keep making mistakes due to inattention in exams. My grades in French, humanities and English are all in the top 90s, in Calculus and Chemistry they are around 95%, Physical Ed is 100. I am struggling more in mechanics, I feel like I messed up the last two tests even though I understand the material fully and did hundreds of questions, my grade without the second test is 89, but it might drop. The thing is that I cannot visualise what the Cote R is, since it isn't just a percentage grade. I know that McGill or any other med school wants a cote r of around 36, but I am getting very pessimistic and starting to see that perhaps I will have something in the low 30s or 20s. My CV is pretty good I would say, but I feel that everything is in vain in a way. I wanted to see if someone has had a similar experience, and how he got out of it (or what happened to him in the end.)
  2. I am a current UBC medical student who was accepted to every medical school I applied to my first application cycle: UBC (OOP applicant), U of T, McMaster, Western and Queens. I would love to pass on my knowledge to eager applicants, whether you have interviews coming up this year or if you just want to get a head start. I am familiar with panel, MMI, and mixed format interviews. I am asking $60/hr for any interview content of your choosing (mock interviews, practice questions, general tips, etc). I am only looking to work with a small group of applicants as I am a busy student myself. Please PM me if interested
  3. I'm planning on choosing BSc Forensics as my premed in Canada. Do you think there's any scope for it there in case I don't get into med school? Will a Masters in Forensics help me land a stable job with a stable income?
  4. 8 Years ago I went to university full time for a year, got pretty bad grades (including 1 failed class). Now I just finished my second year of undergrad a second time with a perfect 4.0 so far. Out of the Med Schools around me (Western, McMaster, uoft) how would they all look at this. Would they even require / know about this year? I know Western takes your best 2 years which would give me a shot, but how about the other two schools? Would they take those courses into the equation? Unfortunately even if I continue a perfect 4.0 throughout all 4 years I will be stuck with a 3.5 - 3.6 GPA which probably isn't good enough to get in from what I've seen.
  5. Can anyone recommend a service that helps prep for Dal's MMI or essay? I know the essay is different this year, but I'm still looking to improve my weak points from my last application. Thanks!
  6. Hey! I’m planning to apply the next cycle and I’m a little confused over the AGPA calculations. I’m planning to complete a three year degree, so I will only have ~60 cred hours completed by the application deadline. The bulletin says that there has to be 90+ cred hrs completed to actually adjust it, so I’m wondering how this works. much guidance appreciated! Thank you!
  7. Hello! I’m an incoming pre-med student and I’ve been accepted to both McGill’s Anatomy and Cell Biology program, and Queen’s Health Science program. I’ve been having difficulties choosing between the two because I love the Queen’s program, but I really dislike the idea of being in Kingston, ON and the general student body atmosphere. However, I still like the program at McGill, but I’m not as informed on it. As well, I deeply love Montreal and the people there. Any opinions/advice is welcome, what would you recommend as a pre-med student?
  8. TL;DR: Addiction fxcked my undergraduate degree making my 4yr degree an 8 yr one. I have a decent 2yr gpa (3.88). Is it even worth it to apply to Western and Queens? Before I begin, I want to make it clear that I'm not looking for anyone's sympathy. I just want guidance on how to move forwards! I started my undergraduate degree in 2012. I had a 3.0ish cGPA (I was not thinking about applying to med school at this time) going into my spring semester of 3rd year when I developed a drug addiction. I ended up ruining my aGPA for the year. I failed even further in 4th year (<2.0 cgpa). I ended up abandoning my degree in 5th year by October leaving me with a very low cGPA (<2.0) as I didn't have the wherewithal to drop out of my classes (yikes). Thankfully, my family got me the help I needed soon after and I'm happy to say I've been sober since December of 2017 (not yikes). After a lot of reflecting, I made it my goal to complete my degree, and reenrolled in Sept of 2018. I've now graduated and my 2yr GPA is a 3.88 (not yikes)! I want to apply to schools that look at 2yr GPAs (Western and Queens) but I'm worried that the admissions committees won't take too kindly to how long it took for me to complete my degree. Should I apply during the upcoming cycle or should I do a 2nd degree? If anyone has interviewed and/or received an offer of admissions with a lengthy undergard degree please let me know! Thank you in advanced!
  9. Hi there. Im going to start grade 12 in September and Im looking into universities. I really want to go to medical school one day but I have concerns for my bachelors. I am a decent student, I get high 80's and sometimes 90's depending on the course. I think that If I apply to Health Sci, i'll have a better chance of getting in because Bio Med and Med Sci is sooo competitive. At the same time I worried it'll be a disadvantage to my learning if I take Health Sci! If I take Health Sci, will I still be able to go to medical school. The goal is to be a paediatrician or maybe even an anesthesiologist! thanks:)
  10. Hi Everyone, 2 courses I took during the fall semester of my 1st year were pass/fail courses. O.K, so that year won't count for Ottawa's wGPA calculation So my questions are: would the final 3 years of my study be valid for the calculation? And if this does occur, what will happen to the first year marks — would they just disappear?
  11. Hi, so I may have the opportunity to go on a wildlife conservation mission in Thailand or Bali, however, I can also choose to go on a medical mission/learning thing in Vietnam or India. The wildlife conservation mission is really cool and more hands on while the medical missions are more seminar and workshops. For medical school, which would be a better option? It seems intuitive that the medical mission would be the better choice, but I feel that it might be very standard (like many people have done it) whereas the elephant conservation mission may be more unique. Thoughts?
  12. Hi, I'm still in high school and I'm looking at which "premed" program to apply to next year that focuses on preparing students for medicine. I know that any program is good as long as you can get a good GPA and high MCAT scores, but are they any specific programs (in Canada) that gear specifically towards premed? Thanks in advance!
  13. Hello, I am a medical student in a Canadian school and was wondering if anyone knew anything about or could point me towards some resources on what would happen and what I should consider if instead of doing my residency in Canada I go to the UK to do so. I ask because I have family there that I might need to take care of and want to decide my best course of action. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
  14. Hi I'm a 13 year old boy and I was recently told that I've got a quite severe dental condition. If anyone knows how to solution to this please reply. I have an: Open bite (8mm gap) and a lower jaw that isn't growing whereas my upper jaw is. The dentist told me that they could have fixed the lower jaw problem if id been bought there at the age of 10. They also told me that they could use drills or something similar to decrease the gap by maybe 5mm. Leaving me with a 3mm gap and a lower jaw problem. I was also told to do an xray. If anyone knows how to solution to this please reply. Thanks and please don't report me. Id just like some help and opinions from others around the world
  15. Hello, I know everyone must be tired of seeing these types of "what are my chances" posts but I could really use some advice. I am currently in my last year of my undergrad at UofC and eligible to graduate this spring. Unfortunately, med school has only become a dream of mine in the last year or so and my first two years GPA does not reflect this desire at all. Here is a breakdown: I have taken 5 courses each semester for my entire degree. GPA: 1st year: 2.73 2nd year: 3.02 3rd year: 3.61 4th year: 4.00 EC's Do pracitucms count for this? If so, I done extensive work in my community with local organizations working with individuals with disabilities. I have spent time at The Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured and done an internship at Emily follensbee (a school for children with multiple and complex learning needs). I have spent the last year working with the Government of Alberta creating and delivering a prevention presentation on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder that I have delivered to grade 8 and 11 classrooms as well as university classrooms. I have been lucky enough to have done a lot of traveling over the course of my degree (20 countries in three years), and I am in the process of planning a trip to Peru with a previous professor of mine to assist her with research as well as doing some volunteering. I have also been doing volunteering within the university and external organizations on my own time. I have been working one job for the past 4 years (just serving at a restaurant, so not very relevant). I do not have any publications at this point. My understanding is that UofC will use your three best years to count your GPA but even with dropping my first year that would leave me with a 3.54 which is not competitive. Any advice going forward? As I see it I have three options: 1. take a 5th or 6th year of my current degree 2. take a second undergrad 3. apply for grad school (although I feel like this would be the least useful) Any recommendations going forward would be very much appreciated!!! Thank you!
