OOP Applicant:

About a 3.68 best of 2 years GPA with most the recent year being a 3.9

MCAT: VR 11 PS 13 BS 13 R

Extracurriculars: medical volunteering, peer counselling, research, etc.

I was accepted off the waitlist this morning and I will be jumping on the offer (I always wanted to live in Calgary).

I am also currently waitlisted at the Albany Medical College and St. Louis University School of Medicine and will be withdrawing from those lists soon.

I can't believe I'm actually posting here... I thought that I should post my stats though to give others that may be in a similar position some hope!

I did my undergrad in Life Sciences at Queen's and then an MA at UofC

cGPA (undergrad): ~3.3

GPA (best 2 yrs): 3.7

GPA (grad): 4.0

MCAT: 10P, 8V, 10B, S (I wrote the MCAT 3 times!!)

Extracurriculars... quite a diversity of activities (always kept myself really busy and also had some amazing work opportunities). In all honesty I think this was the strongest part of my application by far, but it is hard to find schools that will recognize it (especially with my stats!).

This is my 4th year applying to meds:

1) applied UofO, Mac, UofC (rejected pre-interview at all of them)

2) applied UBC, UofA, UofC, Queen's, Mac, UofO, UofT, Western, NOSM, Memorial (interviewed at UBC, UofC, and NOSM; waitlisted at UBC and UofC)

3) applied UBC, UofA, UofC, UofO, UofT (rejected pre-interview at all of them - missed the UofC cut-off by 1 mark out of 400!!! Ouch!)

4) applied UBC, UofA, UofC, UofO, UofT; interviewed at UofC only; ACCEPTED off the waitlist!!!! (wow... still can't believe that!)

UofC is by far my top choice and I am SO happy to be saying that I will be attending in August! :) It's been a long haul... but it just goes to show perseverance pays off!

I'm an IP applicant. I just finished my BSc at the U of A in Biological Sciences and Chemistry. My GPA was about 3.75 and my MCAT marks were:

Physical Sciences: 11

Verbal Reasoning: 12

Writing Sample: Q

Biological Sciences: 12

I have tons of extracurriculars and volunteering, including music and dance lessons, being a Brownie Leader, volunteered at the U of A hospital for two years, was a Study Buddy at my old junior high, taught an MCAT prep course for the past two years, volunteered at the U of A Open House...and many more! Unlike most med students, I don't have any research experience.

This is my first time applying to medical school. I applied to U of A, U of C, UBC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, UWO, McMaster, U of T, Ottawa, NOSM, Queen's, and Memorial.

I got interviews at U of C and UWO.

I was waitlisted at UWO.

I was waitlisted, then accepted at U of C, and I'll be going to U of C starting in August!

Well, I was only taking 3 classes per semester last year (it was my fifth year of undergrad), so I had time to apply to lots of schools. I just wanted to give all of them a shot to see how many I actually had a chance at. I JUST missed the GPA cut-off at Queen's (by 0.03 or something ridiculous like that). I didn't apply to Dalhousie because I didn't make their cumulative GPA cut-off for OOP applicants. The GPA I listed above is for my third and fourth years of undergrad. I started out kind of weak, so my cumulative GPA is closer to 3.65. I think the cut-off at Dalhousie for OOP applicants is 3.7.

I got THE e-mail on May 30...an amazing day!

Those of you who are on Facebook will already know who I am! I'm in our group! I didn't even know this forum existed until you guys started posting about it on Facebook. Probably a good thing...knowing how many amazing applicants there are would have just freaked me out!

Can't wait to see you all! One month left! Happy Canada Day, everyone!

well I just got the e-mail on July 1st (Happy Canada day!) - ps. I'm in Tokyo atm for the next 2 weeks :S so hopefully the admissions people get all my stuff in time :S. It's been an interesting process for this whole entire application. I went from initially being rejected for interview to being phoned for interview (pre-interview score pretty close to the cutoff...), then waitlisted... then accepted !! (woohoo)..

anyway my stats:

3rd Year IP applicant from the U of T Microbiology specialist program

GPA (at the end of 2nd year): 3.92 ; end of this year: 3.94

MCAT: 14 PS, 10 VR, 12 BS, Q

applied to Queen's, UofC, toronto, mcmaster - interviews at Queen's and UofC

ECs: violin for 15 years (lots of playing in ensembles in Calgary/Toronto), volunteering at TGH, a lot of peer tutoring/counselling, research in clinical microbiology, school newspaper editor/journal ed in university, other misc. clubs/activities

Anyway I'm just ecstatic because I'm not only happy that I'm in Japan but completely surprised that I was offered admission (I thought it was over since they posted the info for the next cycle already!)

Monkeyz who are you? I'm on Facebook too but have no which one of the 53 members of our group you are. Just curious thats all. Obviously I'm the dude who organized the caving trip.

Well, I'm a female, and my initials are V.N. That should help ;)

By the way, everyone going on the caving trip, have a great time! Don't bond too much, though. Don't want the rest of us to be left out ;)

I also very briefly played violin...in elementary school. I was horrifically bad, though. I've taken singing and dancing lessons for quite a few years. If anyone is interested in taking a dancing class, I'd be up for it!

I have been explicitly waitlisted.

I'm a Alberta (Edmonton) resident who completed undergraduate studies in 2006. My GPA was ~3.4 and my MCAT scores (best score) were:

Physical Sciences: 13

Verbal: 9

Biological Sciences: 10

Written Sample: S

I was waitlisted by Calgary on May 15 and accepted on July 23. This is my second time applying to this school, and third time applying for medicine somewhere.

I applied to UAlberta, McMaster, Western, UofT, and UCalgary, as well as several schools in the United States.

I was interviewed at UCalgary only.

Of all the schools I applied to, UCalgary was my second choice (McMaster was my first).

BTW, I don't seem to have received the e-mail from UofC—just got the call. If someone could PM me the info on accessing the application package on-line that would be much appreciated. With 8 days to go, I'd like to get a start on finding accomodation and organizing everything tonight!

Just call Nancy in the Admissions office. She forgot to send me the acceptance email too when I was accepted. I don't think it would be proper for one of us to just give you the password.

BTW, congrats and we are having a get otgether at a pub on july 31. check out the face book group for more details.

The office was closed by the time I realized I hadn't received the e-mail so I have to wait until tomorrow unless someone can get me the password earlier. I fully understand that you don't want to pass on the password.

If someone can, though, I would appreciate knowing the immunization info and to whom to make out my deposit cheque and where to mail it to. That's probably not sensitive information and then I can deal with those first thing tomorrow morning (Premier's pancake breakfast is tomorrow morning, so I'm heading out at 6:00 am!).

As for the get-together, I refuse to join Facebook. I also don't drink so I probably wouldn't go to the get together anyway, but thanks for the invite!

Congratz Who MD!! So now you don't have to worry about the interview weighing and such ;)

As far as immunization is concerned, i can remember a few (someone please add to or correct me for inaccuracies) : diphtheria, TB, mumps/measle/rubella, polio, tetanus, Varicella zoster ...

For the deposit, you can send a bank draft (payable to "University of Calgary)" to the admissions office; their address can be found on the MD admissions website. That's what I did, and it worked :)

I don't drink as well, but I think it's a good idea to get together ... anyway, it's up to you, i don't like pubs in general, but i like to socialize  So, if i can make it to Calgary in time for the gathering, I will ... hope that they offer juice or milk @ the pub!!

Yeah you don't have to be a boozer to go to the pub. Coffee, tea, water, whatever you want, it's all good. ;) The get together is at Moose's at 8 on july 31, apparently its on 16th across from the Hospital but I've never been there so can't say definitively.

just in case anyone is wondering, I forgot my password for this site and started a new account. It was on automatic login, then I moved and my computer is in storage, and my old email is cancelled so I couldn't retrieve the password. I am the dude formerly known as drcave

You also need at least the first shot for Hep B or prior evidence of Hep B infection. I believe that the vaccines are usually not covered unless you're a healthcare worker in Alberta.

Edit: We also have a facebook group going for a lot of the info. Check it out!
