Does anyone know of any forums akin to this one that are for those in Pre-vet? I've found this forum so useful for myself, that if one exists for Vet Med, I'd like to pass it on to some friends. Thanks.

The canadian vet schools are pretty small...there are only 4 - 3 English and 1 French.

On top of that, they all have 'residency' requirements...meaning that you must be a legit resident of their area (province or region) to be eligible to apply... So, you are only eligible to apply to ONE vet school in Canada. Which limits your options.

They are:

Atlantic Veterinary College - at UPEI. You must be a resident of PEI, NS, NB or NFLD to apply.

Quebec school - francophone

Ontario Veterinary College - at U of Guelph. You must be an Ontario resident or English speaking from Quebec to apply.

Western Veterinary College - in Saskatchewan? (I think)...must be a resident of BC, AL, MAN or SK to apply.

They all have different pre-reqs and requirements...but you can only apply to one (due to the residency requirements) so you don't have to worry about dealing with the requirements of more than one school.

OVC usually has ~500 applicants each year for 100 spots. Tuition is still the same as usual undergrad tuition (even though it is a de-regulated program...Guelph decided to be nice!) You need a minimum of 2 years of undergrad (including a whole whack of pre-reqs (genetics, chemistry, physics, stats, etc)) and you need to write the MCAT. The application cycle is LATE...you don't even have to apply until May for Sept entry...and you won't know until July. You need to write an essay of some description and you may/may not be interviewed (only borderline candidates get interviewed, the rest get either automatic acceptances or rejections). Extra-currics aren't unimportant either - but the one that matters the most is animal experience - especially LARGE animal (horse, cow, pig, etc).

Tell your friend to talk to OVC admissions...they are very helpful and are willing to sit down with you to discuss your application and its strengths and weaknesses BEFORE you submit it!

Good luck!

They might have changed the rules...and there are different deadlines for 'external' applicants (ie non-university of Guelph undergrads)....when I was at Guelph, you had to register an 'intent to apply' by sometime in Feb...but the actual application process happened much later...

This may all have changed by now though...I wouldn't be at all surprised.
