Guest ewon2003
Hi everyone, Had some partying after the acceptance from UBC. I was just rejected by Queens, and probably too by Western cuz I haven't received anything yet. Oh well. I am in province, and have been reading a lot of postings ever since I received interview offers. Your postings (especially those from Kirsteen and Ian) have been invaluable, and helped me a lot. Best of luck to those of you waitlisted or re-applying waitlist, and I look forward to seeing some of you at the financial seminar. Thanks. Guest venetianblinds
I'm a BC resident who has just completed her undergraduate studies. My GPA was 3.51 (OMSAS) and my MCAT scores were 25P (very low in comparison). By grace, I was accepted by UBC. This is my first time applying to this school. Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend UBC or McMaster. -venetianblinds

Guest coastal79
I'm a BC resident who graduated from UVIC with a BA in English in 2002. I had an A- average, and my MCAT marks were 13-15 VR, 10 BS, 10 PS, Q. This was the second time that I applied to UBC and, just for all of you who were also rejected and might be getting a bit depressed, my pre-interview mark went from 25/50 the first time I applied to 36/50 this last time. Of all the schools I applied to I would most like to attend Queens and, wonderful how these things work out, I'll be there in September I was also interviewed at U of A and Manitoba and should hear about them in the next few days. Guest shrimp
PGmed, Are you a health care professional? how can you be a medical missionary? What did you do in those countries?
Guest PGmed
No, I am not a health care professional. At the time I was just a pre med student interested in medicine. I got involved in medical missionary work by directly contacting Doctors who are actively volunteering overseas. My first trip to Guatemala was an extension of a two week tour with Y.W.A.M. During that tour I met a Canadian doctor running a rural clinic. The conditions of the clinic were insane. I stayed on for the next three months doing mostly triage. I learned a lot of medicine, but it was a crazy experience. I was in way over my head. Two years later I got on with S.I.M. as a short term missionary. I spent four months in Bolivia in their “medical elective program”. This program is intended for med students, and typically American med students get credit for this. In Bolivia I spent the first two months with an Australian pediatrician who was starting up his own urban practice. I then spent the next two months with an American Family Doctor who was servicing an extremely remote area in the Bolivian highlands. In both these situations I was treated like a student; I shadowed these doctors, performed vaccination clinics, assisted with house/village calls, and helped out with the government required paper work. It was much more of a study experience then it was a work experience. This past year I volunteered with Faith in Practice, and worked in the OR of Hermano Pedro Hospital in Antigua, Guatemala. I assisted surgeons and specialists who were visiting from the states. Faith in Practice is an American organization which staffs this hospital with specialists from the states. The specialists form teams of health care workers which each come down for a one week stay. The teams consist of Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Scrub tecs, and recovery nurses. The teams rotate in such a way that the hospital is always fully staffed. I assisted teams of general surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, ENTs, OB/GYNs, and plastics. Typically there is way more demand for surgery then the team can ever satisfy. Thus the surgeons take advantage of any one who is willing to assist, so that each surgeon can then maximize a surgical theater. It was an amazing learning experience. I started of by just holding, retracting, and driving the laparoscopic cameras, but by the end I was doing much more. Brian.
Guest shrimp
wow! I really admire that you had so many wonderful experience! I wonder if all of them were volunteering work....or did you get paid? Honestly, after graduation, I don't have money to travel and do months of volunteering work. Therefore, I can only join local volunteer programs.
Guest PGmed
Hey Shrimp. All of my overseas work was volunteer, and I had to pay my way. But because of my experiences I received tax breaks and some scholarships which were based on my volunteer work. Surprisingly, it is not as expensive as you would think. Living expenses in a third world country are very cheap. However, if staying in the home of a missionary, it is customary to pay a room and board fee. Some Christian organizations such as S.I.M. assist you in fundraising for missionary work. They would prefer it if participants did not use personal finances to fund their work. Brian. Guest FungManX
Thought I'd help keep the tradition going.. hehe seems like everyone is gonna get their acceptances/waitlist/rejection letters soon so.... here it is cut and pasted from one of Ian's posts from a while back. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi all, Here's a quick questionnaire regarding the admissions process at UBC. We ran this questionnaire last year, and I'd like to keep it going on an annual basis so we can generate some profiles of applicants who have been accepted, rejected, or placed on a waitlist for each school. If you are applying this year, please take a few minutes to fill out the below questions. Please keep all replies focussed as answers to the below; I will delete any non-answers in this thread. If you have any questions, please start a new thread so that this one stays on topic. Please check out the big thread in the General Premed Forum as well to let us know which schools accepted you, and which ones waitlisted you or rejected you: pub125.ezboard.com/fpremed101frm0.showMessage?topicID=648.topic If you can copy and paste the below form, and fill it out, that'd be awesome. If you want to contribute your GPA and MCAT stats in addition, that's great too. ------ I'm a (Province) resident in (undergraduate or graduate) studies. My GPA was (XYZ) and my MCAT scores were: Physical Sciences: (x) Verbal: (y) Biological Sciences: (z) Written Sample: (z) I was (accepted/rejected/waitlisted) by UBC. This is my (first/second/third/more than third) time applying to this school. Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend (XYZ Med School) as my first choice. ------
