As with the thread in the General Premed Forum, here's a quick questionnaire regarding the US med school admissions process.

If you can copy and paste the below form, and fill it out for with your experiences applying to US med schools, that'd be awesome. If you want to contribute your GPA and MCAT stats in addition, that's great too. :)

------

I'm a (Province or State) resident in (undergraduate or graduate) studies, and have (Canadian or US or XYZ) citizenship. My GPA was (XYZ) and my MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: (x)

Verbal: (y)

Biological Sciences: (z)

Written Sample: (z)

I was (accepted/rejected/waitlisted) by XYZ med school. This is my (first/second/third/more than third) time applying to this school.

Accepted at: MCW, Wash U

Rejected at: Hopkins

Waitlisted at: BU

Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend (XYZ Med School) as my first choice.

------

Ian

I'm an ontario applicant and am wondering whether I have a better chance applying to US schools or whether it's better to apply to schools in other canadian provinces? I am going on an academic exchange so will have limited time to complete applications and want to maximize my chances!

Hey gonzo...

if you want to get more responses...you should post in the main forum, rather than under this thread...

first, it depends on your profile...that is how competitive you are...your MCAT scores and GPA...along with your extra-currics

Also, if although you are going on academic exchange, in my opininon, I would apply to both, that is OOP and US and then see what happens. The schools outside of Ontario do give preference to their own residents, which then limits the number of seats available. There are a lot of factors to consider here. Apply to as much as you can...

Written Sample: O, R

I was rejected by Georgetown, Albert Einstein, Albany, Boston U, Eastern Virginia, Michigan St., Feinberg, Rosalind Franklin, Wake forest, Wayne St., and put on "continue to review" which i think means "we'll wait a little longer to reject u" at Penn St. and George Washington U. This is my first time applying to these schools.

Guest Scottish Chap

British citizen here. B.Sc. (2.1 Honours) in pharmacology from Edinburgh University, M.S./Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. Just turned 28 and I've been a post-doc. for two years at Johns Hopkins.

This is my first time applying to these schools

Immediate acceptance: University of Rochester, SUNY Upstate

Waiting post-secondary: Johns Hopkins, Buffalo

Rejected pre-secondary: Indiana University

Rejected post-secondary: MUSC, Maryland, Vermont, Albany, UMDNJ.

I also applied to the international pool at both Toronto and McMaster. Toronto invited me for an interview and McMaster rejected me; that makes no sense.

AMCAS Submitted Aug. 13 after August MCAT.

Secondaries completed by end of Sept.

I took the August MCAT once and applied once with a late application (this hurts you in the U.S.). Take heart and ignore the naysayers-there is much more to the admissions process (at least, in American schools) than GPA and MCAT. A strong performance in one can offset the other but there absolutely needs to be something else in your file that really grabs their attention. Whatever that may be, send it and to them (I sent multiple, varied basic and clinical publications.....it may or may not have helped); U.S. schools WILL add it to your file and it WILL be looked at. Good luck God bless! :D

I'm an Alberta/Ontario resident in graduate studies (M.Sc.), and have Canadian citizenship. My GPA is 3.80 and my MCAT scores were:

Physical Sciences: 10

Verbal: 9

Biological Sciences: 10

Written Sample: S

I was rejected (no interview) by Cornell, Boston U, Dartmouth and U Chicago. I am waiting to hear back from: Columbia, Stanford, USC, U Penn, Einstein and Brown. This is my first time applying to US schools. I also applied to U of T, UWO, Queen's, McMaster and McGill. I had to rob a bank to afford all of the application fees.

Considering my MCAT scores, I may have been a little over-ambtious/naïve to apply to so many top schools, but I took the August 2004 MCAT.

Of all the schools I applied to, I'd like to attend which ever one I get accepted to.

I hate emoticons, but I'm not bitter.

Good luck to all of you.

Guest wannabdoc

great news Scottish Chap. I know last year you had applied to Canadian schools but were not so successful.

Rochester is an awesome school. I was wondering if you are planning to take the research track or the clinical at Rochester medical school. You also completed your masters and phD from Rochester and I was wondering if that helped the adcom at Rochester recognize your application better?

Cheers

Dear Dubber,

Wow, and I thought I applied to a lot of schools! Looks like you've had way more success than I did.

My GPA is 3.8 UGrad and 3.7 Grad, and my MCATs were 10PS, 10BS, 9VR, SWS. I have been rejected from 6/12 US schools (and no word from the other 6), and UWO and Queen's. I've been put on the interview waitlist at McMaster and no word yet from U of T.

I was wondering if you would be able to tell me when you completed your AMCAS applications. I know that early completion can increase your chances as an applicant. I completed my AMCAS in July and finished all my secondaries by September. Was this too late?

By the way, you may want to give Queen's a call and ask them why you did not receive an invite. It sounds like you met their cut-offs. A friend of mine who is in 2nd year there today received a rejection letter when he applied in 2003. When he called the admissions office to ask why (his GPA was 3.9 and MCATs were 35S), they said,"woops! I guess we made a mistake."
