How much ECs should be enough?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm a graduate with a science degree from UBC.

I was just going over the admissions information on U of Saskatchewan veterinary medicine, and it says that they require applicants to have certain amount of experience with animals.

It is only recently that I started to consider veterinary medicine, and thus I have no ECs that involves animals whatsoever...

One side of me tells me that I can just start now and do extensive amounts of ECs and work my way.

However, another part of me keeps on being negative, and it gets discouraging when I compare myself to other competitive applicants that would've built lifelong experiences with animals. I'm assuming a lot of the applicants would be those that wanted to be vets for a long time and thus acted on their goals for many years.

I just want to get some idea on my possibility.

By the way, my overall GPA is around 83%, but I didn't do full courseload for all my years (which would act as a disadvantage)

The goal of the experience section of the application is to insure that you know what you're getting yourself into. Veterinary medicine is such a diverse career path, you need to demonstrate to the admission committee that you have truly evaluated the profession as a viable career for yourself. I would recommend getting involved with a small animal clinic (volunteering, or as a kennel assistant), getting involved with a large animal veterinarian or farm, and spending time at a shelter. Keep in mind that you are going to be competing with applicants that have thousands of hours of EC experience. As far as I'm concerned, the actual number of hours doesn't really matter (suffice to say that someone who has 500 hours vs. 10 hours likely has a better understanding of their experience).

I don't know what the competitive average for BC is, but for AB applicants this last application cycle, the cut off was ~84%. However, WCVM also takes into account the GPA from you highest full-time year, so if you're just on the brink but have one really stellar year, you still might get an interview... but the competitive average for BC applicants might be different as well.

Where did you get the 84% number?
