TML123
I made this thread for BScN students who are going to or are thinking about applying to medical schools. At my school I have yet to meet any other nursing students who are thinking about applying so I figured I would post on here! What schools are you thinking about applying to? How are you preparing for the MCAT? What's your GPA like? Are they any current medical students/residents out there with a BScN undergrad?
12345c
Nursing is probably one of the most complicated "premed" degrees b/c it is extremely hard to fit all your pre reqs in! Also, subjectivity makes it hard to get a 3.9+....
nurseofalltrades
Probably going to apply to basically all Ontario medical schools, and probably Dalhousie and UBC. I have second thought the nursing career, as all this BS theory has no real practical use (so says most of the nurses i talk to as well). Thinking of switching to biomedical science or biology as my pre-med, as it will likely involve much less mental anguish.

I'm having second thoughts as well, wayyyyy to much "fluff" in nursing school. I want to be taught how to do something and to understand why I am doing it. I wish nursing would move away from the nursing model and more towards the medical model. I don't need to learn how to hold hands, do copious amounts of essays on the "fundamental patterns of knowing in nursing" and write unnecessary reflection after reflection on my "professional practice experiences". Aside from the few science courses in my program I don't feel like I am learning anything useful that will help in the future as a nurse. Even though I'm just talking about nursing school and I know that most of the real learning takes place on the job, I really hope med school works out
medisforme
Hey there, I am currently in my second year of medical school at UBC and I did a nursing undergrad. If you have any questions please let me know. As to the poster who voiced their discontent with the numerous self reflection exercises in nursing school, there is a fair bit of that in medical school as well. BizMarkie
I'm a BN and planning on applying to medical school for the first time this fall. I have all my pre reqs except biochem which I'm starting in a few weeks. My GPA is garbage, but above the application cut off for the school I'm applying for and can be made up for if i do well on the mcat.
PeterPatting
Hey guys I'm a second year BScN and have always the both the art and science of health care. I'm incredibly interested in medicine but I also have a soft spot for nursing and I really do think that all this theory "crap" we learn is essential to any health care profession. I think it does make us reflective and critical thinkers which will only help us to be even more patient-centered and compassionate should we make it and go on to become MDs. My first year cGPA was a 3.75. Hoping to 4.0 the next 4 years, going to work my absolute behind off. In terms of pre reqs I'm currently taking 1 years worth of Gen Chem this summer with lab, will be taking 1 years worth of Bio with lab next summer OR will be studying for the MCAT (probably the latter), then will take 1 years worth of orgo the summer of my third year. Then if need be take more pre-reqs after graduation (if I don't get into med) for other schools to open up my options. I'm a little uneducated about how to go about studying the MCAT, but I am really excited to start (may just be initial excitement haha). Just to conclude I thought I would add that choosing nursing as my UG was an absolute no brainer. To this day I firmly believe that a BScN is the BEST premed degree out there,. But that is just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt. Cheers!

And my soft spot for nursing is long gone, so I'm more than happy to be working on getting out. I didn't choose my BN as a premed plan, I decided after I got into the field and started working with MDs. I was so inspired by the kind of care they provided to their patients, I knew medicine was something I wants to pursue. I think having a nursing degree will have some benefits in medicine, but most people find that due to the subjectivity in the coursework, it can be difficult to get a good GPA. Mine was not bad, but it's still being dragged down by my first UG. As for the mcat, I'm taking a prep course because I don't have too many undergrad science courses, but since you do, I don't think you need to spend the money. But I would recommend getting the Examkrackers MCAT kit and checking out Kahn Acasemy (you might not need it since you have UG science courses). I think if you understand the content, you just need to get practice tests (AAMC online has 8 you can get) and just practice practice.

Nurses don't do surgery, diagnose, or do medical treatments (unless you're nurse practitioner) Nursing models are useful in shaping you to become a caring and compassionate nurse. BizMarkie
Where are you applying? I'm applying at the U of M where I am IP. 72% of the inverview formula is based on the mcat score, so I've been studying like crazy for it. I'm also eligible for the rural coefficient which will give my GPA and mcat scores a boost. People with my mediocre GPA get in every year, they just need really good mcat scores. MountainAmoeba
Hey, trying to get into medicine. Average is 3.6 Mcat prep has been self study for the last 6 months, and for another two, I write in July. EC's: varied, sport, volunteer, committees at my hospital, work in an advanced neuro/trauma ICU. About five years ICU experience. Honestly the MCAT prep is so hard, I am going back to school in September to do some science courses. The school I'm interested in doesn't require it, but I know I won't have a competitive score. I'm hoping to get this round of applications, but, I sincerely expect to take two years. I have no idea how the selection committee will view my application compared to trad applicants. My GPA, and mcat scores are lower then others for sure!
