Context: from a small rural northern Ontario town

ECs: Varied activites, some volunteering, many jobs (1000's of hours working) and some normal stuff. I felt my essays were very strong, worked on them for quite a while.

GPA: No idea

Context: from a small town called Ottawa. Have also lived in smaller communities such as Montreal, and Toronto.

ECs: in retrospect, considering my weak connection to the north, I spent way too much time on these. EC's were good enough to land me an OOP interview at UBC...

Context: Grew up and attended HS in a very small northern Ontario town

ECs: Some volunteering, a lot of research, multiple publications. Employment heavy

GPA: 3.72

Context: From a town of 14,000 in Central Ontario

ECs: Hospital volunteering, campus response, research (no pubs), health related employment, exec on some campus clubs, the usual.

Age/Non-trad: Completed UG

Huge congratulations to all invited! Even though I knew I didn't have much of a chance with my non-rural experiences, I still thought NOSM would be a great school.

 

Interview: No

GPA: really have no idea... I think it is maybe 3.8? I don't even know what scale they use.

Context: NONE! I'm from a big city in the West. Hence, not surprised by my rejection.

EC: Typical hospital ones (few years), itsy bitsy amount of research, and lots of work experience.

Age: Finished undergrad in May.

Context: from a small rural Yukon town less than 5000

ECs: Lots of volunteering (Africa/Guatemala and Local), I also have rural health experience as a Registered Nurse and I work as a pediatric nurse at BC Children's Hospital.

Age/Non-trad: 28 years old, two undergrads (1st: sociology/min. Anth 2nd: BSN)

I am currently in my second year of second degree ... I transferred from UBC to TRU b/c I needed to move home...

1st 2nd UG GPA: 3.97 at UBC

2nd year UG GPA: in progress

 

**I honestly don't know if they looked at my 2nd degree?

 

Context: Grew up in Southern Ontario in a rural town...Thornbury/Collingwood area. Went to school in Vancouver.

ECs: Pretty decent I would think: 5 yrs research, long time volunteering inside hospitals and outside.

Age/Non-trad: 25 years. non-grad

GPA: 3.95 (3.75 OMSAS + 0.2 for MA)

Context: Grew up in rural Southern Ontario community of 5,000, lived in Thunder Bay as an adult for 6 years.

ECs: Extremely varied. Lots of travel, varied work experience, outdoorsy things, organic farming, campus first response, wilderness first aid, hospital/community health volunteering.

Interview Location/Date/Time Sat March 29, 1:15pm

Age/Non-trad: 31, non-trad.

GPA: 3.98 (second UG)

Context: Born and raised in Thunder Bay.

ECs: A lot of sports, some community volunteering, coaching hockey, work in developmental service sector and as an RN, some research (no pubs), some travel, lived in Finland for one year playing hockey.

GPA: 3.78

Context: OOP applicant, grew up in a town of less than 4,000 in BC

ECs: Founded a non-profit, volunteering at a children's hospital in their palliative care house and with the emergency medicine research team, summer and in school research, and a competitive cyclist.

Age: 21, 4th year undergrad in biomed

Number of previous applications: 0

 

Super shocked I got an interview. There is hope for those of you OOP applicants who have less than stellar GPAs.

Context: Born and raised in Sudbury, spent some time working on Manitoulin Island

ECs: Coach skating, golf, few other recreational sports, spend lots of time at camp, research (no publications), volunteer with various organizations, just graduated nursing--lots of placement experience, volunteer and placement with various aboriginal organizations, lots of work experience, respite worker

Age/Non-trad: 23, completed UG, now working at HSN as an RN

Interview: Yes - Thunder Bay 29 MARCH 2014

GPA: 3.45

Context: Went to HS in Thunder Bay. Currently studying at Lakehead U.

ECs/Volunteer: community radio station volunteer 4 yrs, an LU student club exec and president 3 yrs, surgical daycare volunteer 1+ yr, local youth orchestra member 6+ yrs and member of various musical ensembles in Thunder Bay, was very active in Air Cadets as a youth 7+ yrs.

 

Work: respite/support worker 3 yrs, standardized patient -1 yr, was employed at small regional airway servicing northern communities 2.5 yrs and other odd jobs

 

Age/Non-trad: 25 yrs. Non-trad? Umm, yes! 4th year UG in music

# of previous applications: 0

 

Lots of ECs but my GPA isn't competitive. It's about the numbers, at the end of the day. Who knows what's going to happen. Although I am looking forward to the MMI!

Context: have lived in TBay for my whole life, 4 years spent at southern Ontario university but home in the summer to work

ECs etc.: volunteering at hospitals and nursing homes, some research, lots of professional development activities, RN experience in long-term care, public health, acute care, HBSc (UWO) and BScN (Lakehead)

Context: Born and raised in Sault Ste marie

ECs: volunteer at hospital 3 years/runner local races/big sisters/teach first aid/work at walk in clinic/nurse practitioner office

Age/Non-trad: 24 years old

let's hope this year's masters being completed makes all the difference :)

ECs: Campus EMS, volunteer in physio clinic, volunteered in med clinic in Central America, coach bantam hockey and high school soccer in my community, current first aid instructor with the company I work for, substitute teach and EA on the side

GPA: 3.97 (3.77 UG + 0.2 MSc... I had no idea you get to add 0.2 for a graduate degree until seeing this thread today)

Context: OOP, grew up in rural NS, but lived in Ontario for my MSc.

ECs: Bit of volunteering, a bunch of research, one publication and many conferences.

Interview Location/Date/Time: March 23, Sudbury

Age/Non-trad: 25, don't know if a BSc physics and MSc applied math would be considered traditional or not.

Context: Born Thunder Bay, High School Kingston, Ottawa/Toronto, Fredericton

ECs: Research Thesis, Afghanistan Tour as medic, Military service, medals and awards for tour and service, competitive runner, work and ran an ER, work as a PA, Canadian Certified Physician Assistant, medical conferences, etc. Honestly, way too much!
