rmorelan
sounds like pathology but only with nights! ha path at least there are very few true emergencies. At the core of the issues with radiology is the fact that imaging now has to be read very, very quickly. It is tied to the requirements of patient care now so much that it is pretty much a 24/7 sort of situation. Ultimately it will probably (I think) pay the similar to internal medicine except have a worse lifestyle. there is no downtime with radiology now - you are doing something every single minute of the day - or at least should be. mononoke
Why is anesthesia going up? It seems like the job market is also tight and a fellowship is needed from what I've heard from the residents & fellows.
ralk
Why is anesthesia going up? It seems like the job market is also tight and a fellowship is needed from what I've heard from the residents & fellows. Hours are still decent, pay is still fairly good. It's also a specialty with a fair bit of a variety and flexibility in practice options (though knocking people out in ORs is still a big piece). It's all relative too, of course - in a situation where most specialties are seeing tightening job markets, an only somewhat tight market like Anesthesiology's is not so bad, especially when all the other aspects of the job are holding up. For example, rads is becoming less popular because on top of its job market, which isn't all that terrible from what I hear (just not as good as it once was), it's seeing worsening hours and lower pay. Dermviser
How competitive would you say Fam Med in an urban setting like Toronto or Vancouver is?
ralk
How competitive would you say Fam Med in an urban setting like Toronto or Vancouver is? Not super competitive in the grand scheme of things, just not a guaranteed position. FM's usually a safe bet, but there's enough people interested in those locations to take that safety away. Anyone wanting to match to Toronto or Vancouver, even in FM, should have back-up locations they're pursuing (and ideally at least one not GTA or GTA-adjacent). rmorelan
doesn't look like Rads is going to be competitive at all this year as per the grapevine from multiple schools.

A-Stark
The specific "Internal Medicine" category I'd assume includes subspecialists, since general internal doesn't tend to pay quite that much (but many subspecialties definitely do). Community GIM pays well, often very well. Certainly better than a lot of subspecialists. ralk
ralk
Community GIM pays well, often very well. Certainly better than a lot of subspecialists. Huh, good to know. I guess that partly explains why it's becoming so popular these days. I knew it paid better than some of the office-based subspecialties, but heard it was still on the lower side of average compared to IM subspecialists. surfergirl
rejected from calgary and ottawa ANESTHESIA. did 4 electives in it. had very solid MSPR (no negative comments, recommended to several core rotation specialties while on them and that's reflected in the mspr comments). really solid reference letters - was offered the letters (didn't even ask) and really encouraged to pursue anesthesia by the reference letter writers (all anaesthetists). i am FREAKING OUT!!!! guys, help!!!!!! i literally do not understand how this is happening as i was feeling really confident going into carms. are there good applicants who get rejected from interviews? should i be freaking out? is anyone else in this boat? how many interviews is "normal". is it normal to not get interviews at some schools? do people not get interviews but still match to the specialty at other sites? I've been hysterically crying all day and don't see how i will get through the next 2 weeks. i feel like my entire life is ruined and i will end up working at mcdonalds next year. objectively i realize im overblowing the situation but i just can't calm myself down and I'm kinda losing it and I'm scaring myself. please PM me or reply. LittleDaisy
Hey surfergirl, I am really really sorry to hear this. Probably Calgary and Ottawa Anesthesia sends out invites in 2-3 days? I heard that some programs send out invites in a few waves. I think that anesthesia is a competitive program, and each school has difficulty choosing candidates. Well I know quite a few anesthesia residents who got rejected pre-interview from OOP schools. Your chance is higher at your home school, each school favors slightly its own students. It's reasonable, since 4 years of medical school, 2 years of clerkship and people in the interview panel knows well the attending who wrote your LORs. Don't get discouraged, you are a stellar candidate for other schools! You could always write to Ottawa and Calgary programs to ask why they didn't pick you for interviews. It is not a red flag to do that. Focus on the interviews that you will get and practice, practice and practice! I wish you all the best for CaRMS! rejected from calgary and ottawa ANESTHESIA. did 4 electives in it. had very solid MSPR (no negative comments, recommended to several core rotation specialties while on them and that's reflected in the mspr comments). really solid reference letters - was offered the letters (didn't even ask) and really encouraged to pursue anesthesia by the reference letter writers (all anaesthetists). i am FREAKING OUT!!!! guys, help!!!!!! i literally do not understand how this is happening as i was feeling really confident going into carms. are there good applicants who get rejected from interviews? should i be freaking out? is anyone else in this boat? how many interviews is "normal". is it normal to not get interviews at some schools? do people not get interviews but still match to the specialty at other sites? ralk
Any word on pediatrics this year? Peds has had a pretty stable match rate for the past 5 years or so and I haven't heard anything to challenge that stability this year. It's a specialty that tends to fly under the radar, I suppose. I'd expect it to run at its typical first iteration match rate in the high-70's or low-80's.

Hey Surfergirl, first of all take a deep breath. You will not be working at mcdonalds next year...at the end of the day you'll still be a Doctor. Those are just 2 schools, did you apply broadly? If so, there are more chances to come. Did you back up with anything? If you did with family, there is a +1 program that allows you to do anesthesiology. As well, there are transfers to Anesthesia from other specialties as well. Talk to your career counselor about this, they might help you understand what is going on. Yes, of course good applicants get interview rejections all the time, as programs must cut their lists down to a manageable number to interview, and may not interview those they feel are unlikely to rank them high (location/fit). Did you have a special connection to these programs? When I went through for my specialty (this will vary by year/competitiveness, so please don't take these numbers as gospel), the people getting 10-11 out of 13 interviews were at the top of the pack (stars).. solid people getting 5-6 interviews out of 13 still ended up matching to their home programs.. if 2/13, I would be concerned that you were not very strong on paper, but it's far too soon to know until all the invites are out.
