Graduate Studies In Canadian Med Schools For Imgs

Hi everyone
I am an international medical student and considering applying for graduate studies ( masters or PhD ) in a basic science in a canadian university
do you have any idea how tough is it for international students to get accepted in these programs and finding funding for it ?

will this (obtaining a PhD or masters from a canadian medical school ) can improve my chances in getting a residency in canada ?

NB: i will be doing a 4 weeks clinical elective followed by another 4 weeks research elective at mcgill university in march 2015 and i hope i can build some connections out there so that i can find a supervisor to accept me in his lab as a graduate student

Many people are doing it. It will certainly help you make connections. Why don't you apply to quebec family medicine residency program? they accept many IMG's each year. 

 

research funding really depends on your lab/supervisor. check each departmental website and email supervisor/coordinator for more info!

actually ,i am interested in pediatrics speciality , i know it's a bit competitive ,however i hope doing graduate studies in Canada will help me improve my chances so that i can apply for pediatrics residency .

It's certainly more than "a bit" competitive. Earning an MSc/PhD from a Canadian university will certainly help, but it's never a guarantee. If you plan to pursue grad work, I will do clinical research rather than simply basic science research. Funding varies, depending on supervisor and university. I'm assuming you are Canadian, so you can apply for some grants from the govt.

guess what ,i am neither a canadian citizen nor a permenant resident

However i am assuming that studying in Canada ( like obtaining a Msc/PhD from a canadian university ) will help me getting a PR status in Canada plus improve my chances in Carms ,that's why i need to do Msc/PhD in Canada so that i can apply for PR and then apply for the Carms

Well you need PR status to even apply so if you are not a citizen or PR then you are pretty much forced to do a MSc or PhD. However, just warning you that the longer you are out of medical school or clinical practice, the lower your chances of getting a residency because program directors want people who haven't lost their skills.

Yes i know that ,however i have no other option .

I am still in my last year in medical school here in Egypt and i am planning to do a clinical elective in March so that i can come in contact with my potential supervisors for graduate studies ,i am also planning to write MCCEE in 2015 so that i can start my graduate studies as soon as i complete my undegaduate studies in order not to waster more time .

i just need to ask one more question

am i required to be a PR of Canada in order to write Q1 exam ? or i can write it even if i am not a PR ?
