Hockeynut
So I'm still convinced that I want to pursue a surgical career. That being said, what can I do in this, my summer after first year, to add to my CV/chances of matching. (Mostly interested in General Surgery, ENT and maybe (slight interest) in Urology/Ortho, main focus on hen sug or ENT) Any advice would be much appreciated. p.s. I plan to apply to every English program in the country. So not targeting one school or one province.
bearded frog
Do you have any research? It's a common time for people to work on pubs. Especially for competitive specialties like ENT and ortho. Some ortho fellowships in Canada now require a master's degree. Otherwise, try to arrange a shadowing/elective situation in one of these fields. Or both, ideally.
hkmedic
Ditto with the above poster. If you're applying to a competitive specialty, summer after first year is a good time to get started on a research project. This will allow you to continue it through in to second year, etc. Many supervisors are flexible and will let you shadow them when they're on clinical duties, or if not them, one of their colleagues or residents. MD2015:)
I would recommend doing research the first summer. Then for the second summer, you can travel if you want for all or part of the summer (maybe could swing travel time and doing some more research with your supervisor from the first summer) or do research in a second speciality if you have decided on pursuing residency in another field. And you could continue doing research during second year school year if you have time and want to. Getting a bit in during the first summer at least gets some research experience under your belt so you can stress less later on if projects you like are hard to come by the next summer
