Where To Start With Animal Experience?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am a high school student and my current goal is to go into Veterinary medicine. Getting the grades are pretty straightforward but what I'm slightly confused about is getting experience. I know a few vets around my area and I know I will be able to volunteer at their practices. But that is just small animal. I really want the experience of working with large animals, farm animals, exotic animals etc. I'm just looking for some vets that have gotten into vet school with the experience I have listed. How did you get experience with large/exotic animals? I'm thinking I could volunteer at a farm or a zoo but I don't exactly know how to come about that. Where do I start? Also planning to volunteer at a local SPCA. Any other suggestions for me?

Do you live near farms or know anyone who works on a farm? You should be able to find a job as a farm hand pretty easily just by asking around.

The work will be difficult and unpleasant, but you will get a lot of animal contact. Guys I went to high school with worked at dairy farms and they were involved with births and tending to the cows' utters, etc.

They also collected semen from the bulls for impregnating the cows. Unpleasant sounding right? I'm sure it builds character though!

There are also a lot of opportunities to volunteer with injured wild life.

I definitely recommend just talking to any neighboring farms. I know my family always accepted people who wanted to help out and you can get some great experience from it. Are there any vets in your area that work with large animals? You could hit them up as well.

I'm completely up and ready for the hard work that comes with working at a farm. I'd love to get that experience. Sounds like a lot of work but sounds like I would learn a lot as well. Thanks!

Yea, I think I'm going to do that! I live in more of a residential neighborhood, not too close to any farms. But I could call a few and ask around. And large animal vets are usually mobile aren't they? You can't exactly bring your cow into a vets office hahahah. Not too sure how I would be able to contact a large animal vet! Any ideas? Thanks!
