I think it's essentially where your MMI score ranks in the total pool of interviewees, with the bottom 30% rejected. As for how MMIs are marked, there's lots of info available elsewhere, but basically you receive a mark on each station, and your total MMI score is the sum of stations (with possibly one or two of your worst stations excluded, depending on the school).
