Any Nurse Practitioners On Here?!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am considering a career as a Nurse Practitioner and would like to hear from any and all NP's about their experience:

Why did you choose to be an NP?

Did you also apply to medical school?

Are you happy with your career?

Also, anything else you would like to add:) It seems like an amazing career:)

Hi,

Just stumbled upon this post today.  I was a RN for 7 years prior to becoming an NP.  In high school, I wanted to be a MD but didn't think I would do well with a pure science degree plus I wanted to explore medicine as soon as I could to see if I even liked it.  I did and spent the next 7 years working in a variety of acute care settings.  I never applied to med school during that time as I was happy working as a RN.  I am now deciding to apply to med school 2 years after starting my NP practice (so 9 years as a RN) because I can clearly see the advantages that the additional training and skills would bring from going to medical school.  I am very good at my job (I have a practice of 900 patients) and manage everyone competently but feel that I could do significantly more with an increased knowledge base, ie. my patients would be receiving better care because I would be better trained.  Given that I am a non-trad applicant, I will only be applying to 1 local school.  I am still feeling it out right now, but I think I will apply 2 years in a row.  If I don't get in, I will be a bit disappointed but I will also be able to continue on with my primary care practice so I feel like I am in a bit of a win-win situation either way.  But I would really love to go to med school!! :)

There is no downside to continuing to re-apply on the side, aside from the application fee. Take any feedback you get from the first cycle, and try to improve upon it (this is assuming of course you don't get in the first time!).

I'd strongly encourage you to rethink the maximum of 2 tries.
