New requirements were just posted on the Schulich Dentistry site. Just an FYI for future applicants:

 

"Effective the application cycle beginning October 1, 2017, the two best undergraduate years used for admission consideration must have a full course load of 5.0 full or equivalent courses (30 credit hours) taken between September and April, with at least 3.0 full course equivalents whose published level is at or above the year level of study."

 

and

 

"Effective the application cycle beginning October 1, 2017, successful completion of prerequisite courses for Dentistry Admissions requires a minimum grade of B or 74.5% based on the Ontario Medical School Application Service (OMSAS) scale for applicants studying at a Canadian university. Western will convert grades and averages for applicants who are not studying in a Canadian university based on grading practices and grading scale interpretation of institutions attended."

 

Seems like they're getting rid of the penalty nonsense, and copying the Schulich Medicine course load approach. Also the minimum prerequisite mark seems a bit high compared to other professional schools that have similar rules...

How would it work for 4th year grades? 6 out of the 10 courses have to be 4th year or higher or is it that they have to be 60% 3rd and 4th year courses

6 out of 10 have to be 4th year.

 

What I'm curious about is fifth years....how would that work?

The way it works for Western Med is that 3/5 FCE have to be at the 3rd year level or higher for Years 3,4,5,etc. This is probably going to be the same for dentistry so in essence if your in 4th or 5th year, you need 3/5 FCE that are at the 3rd level or higher. This accounts for the schools that don't offer many 4th year courses and makes it a level playing field.

Nope, when I contacted them about this, I was told ones program requirements supersede any limitations placed on how many first year courses you can take. Thus, they don't have any set limitation on how many first year courses that can be taken but only that 3.0 FCE are taken at the current year or higher.

Does anyone know if the prerequisite minimum grade counts for courses taken as prerequisite but not for credit? For example, I took physiology from U of T continuing studies, as an approved class was not available at my home university. Since it was not for credit, I wasn't concerned with my mark and only about passing it. I can't remember what grade I got for sure, and it is no longer available for me to check for some reason, but I'm almost positive it was either 71 or 74. I'm stressing pretty hard about this now as I could've easily gotten over a 75 if I knew that I needed to, but I worked double shifts the entire week before the exam because I knew I could pass with minimal studying. Its pretty annoying they just announced this now. It'll cost me over $1000, not to mention 2 months of my time, if I have to take it again.

Unfortunately it seems like you'd have to retake it if you want to apply in 2017. It's definitely aggravating though -- it only gives people who didn't get 75 in even one prerequisite course one chance to apply, unless they retake courses.

It's very aggravating, especially because I just took it last spring and had they let us know about this change a year earlier I could've easily gotten 75. Considering I have 2 interviews this year and won't hear until mid May about them, I can't see myself starting the course again, as it starts in early April... I'll likely just hope for the best and if not, hopefully I can take the challenge exam if I get an interview next year, rather than retake the course

Just got an email from the admissions office about this question!:

 

3.0 FCE are required at the third level and above in all years above and including your third year (i.e. 3rd, 4th, 5th year). This would mean that you could take all third year courses in your fourth and fifth year and meet the requirements. This takes into account the limited availability of fourth year courses at some institutions and gives a level playing field for all applicants. Hope this helps clarify your question.

So just So I understand, after 3rd year you just need to take 3.0 3000+ level courses, and even if you don't take any 4th year courses in 4th year, you should be okay for the requirement

Yeah exactly. Based on the response, you will be okay as long as you take a minimum of 3.0 3rd year courses or higher in your 3rd, 4th, 5th year.

How would it work for a student at UWO who got between 70-74% in pre-requisite course since it is technically a B at UWO? Would the percent count or the letter grade on the UWO grading scale conversion?

If the course was taken at UWO, they always take the % grade. So a 74 wouldn't be good enough, which is pretty lame in my opinion.  :mellow:

I definitely don't agree with the grade cut off considering some universities have much lower averages in courses like orgo. A 70% cutoff is more realistic. Implementing the rule should be starting in 2018 application cycle so second year + students who have already taken the courses don't have to redo them (current first year students are notified of the rule prior to taking the courses). Also, I don't get the 0.5, a 74.5% gets rounded to a 75%.

All candidates must complete approved courses in the following subjects:

  • At least one half lab course in Organic Chemistry
  • At least one half course in Biochemistry
  • One full course in Human or Mammalian Physiology

 

Yes, I believe that is correct. If you have any questions about admissions don't be afraid to call the admissions office. They're really friendly and helpful! :)
