Canadian Studying In The Us--Chances At Anesthesia Residency?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Canadian here studying in the US.

I have my heart set on becoming an anesthesiologist. How impossible will it be to match back in Canada?

Would a better strategy be to crush the boards down here, get into a great residency and fellowship (need to do a year of fellowship to meet the 5 year training requirement), then move back home for a job?

Thoughts?

Do you know anyone who's successfully done either?

Thanks in advance!

Definitely possible - make contacts in Canada and do electives. Otherwise just focus on the US and get strong board scores and some experience.

Either way is fine - you may have an easier time matching in the states assuming you do well on boards. But doing it back in Canada is doable too, just less objective - and have to do well in the rotations... if you're early on in med school, try to use your summers well.

You will have to sort of split your electives unfortunately going for both Canada and the US, not a big deal if you do them well.

Only you know how strong of a student you are - if you are bottom of your class...well maybe anasthesia isn't for you, but if you're at least average and above average is better!

Good luck, Canadians at USMD and USDO programs have matched anasthesia in Canada and the US before, so its not like its an impossible feat. It just takes planning, diligence, and a bit of luck!

Its good you are thinking now already, assuming your an M1.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply.

I'm an M1. We don't get any summer breaks at my USMD school. We do pre-clinicals in 18 months, take step 1 by first week of February, then hit the wards halfway through 2nd year. It's intense.

I'm not worried about matching in the US, I know that if I do well on boards I can land a good residency.

I'm worried about the subjective nature of Canadian residency selection.

I've been away for 5 years and really want to make it home one day.
