Exams Every 2-3W In Residency

Recommended Posts

I heard that for specialties where you don't get much coverage in med school (ie derm, rad onc) there are course-based exams every 2-3 weeks in pgy-2 residency. What are examples of other specialties that have exams regularly or is this characteristic of all specialties?

not of all certainly - I am very surprised it would be for those either(?) :)

as an example we have daily rounds in radiology and tests about 4 times a year at my school, which is similar to many other places.

Definitely not in anesthesia. We have case rounds every Tuesday where we work through a complex case as a group and everyone is expected to speak. There are also core subject exams about 4 times a year, oral practice exam once every year, and the North American Anesthesia Knowledge Test 4 times in residency. Some blocks have small oral exam/MCQs at the end. Then of course LMCC 2 and Royal College. Definitely not an exam every 2-3 weeks

Every year in my program (surgical specialty) have:

2 faculty run in training exams (OSCE + Short answer Questions)

2-3 MCQ exams (very informal)

1 international MCQ in-service exam (run by the american board in our specialty)

On top of that we have to write the Royal College Surgical Foundations exam in PGY-2.

I have never heard of a specialty giving their residents exams every 2-3 weeks.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yeah I agree with everyone else, I have not heard of a residency program that does exams every 2-3 weeks. I know of programs that do have monthly mini quizzes (informal) to test around assigned reading chapters.

We do practice in-service and board exams (one Canadian and one American, short answer + MCQ), plus practice oral exams, every year.
