You might have to deal with additional living expenses if not covered by your scholarships, bursaries or funding options but it's been done before and they've been happy with their decisions. You just have to take the initiative to contact them yourself. Personally, I think you should do it if there is a distinct project out there or if you want the experience. Having done research in a big US school shouldn't matter for residencies and you may not even get published. Just my 2 cents and why I didn't pursue it.
