Should I Apply?

Recommended Posts

I'm having trouble deciding if I should apply to this school. I would really appreciate it if someone can some advice.

about myself:

BC resident

going to 4th year university

GPA: 3.81

MCAT: 131/124CARS/127/125

EC: lots of research, lots of club activity, I'm honestly pretty confident with my ECs

My concern:

the website indicates 5 seats for 350 out of province applicants

Thanks in advance for the input!

One thing to remember about MUN is that for OOP applicants, they don't look at ECs at all pre-interview. There's been a lot of debate about this on the forums but I believe they make GPA and MCAT cutoffs for OOP applicants based on the applicant pool. Honestly, the stats of OOP applicants that have gotten invites in the past (based on the posters here anyway) seem quite a bit higher than yours. The application fee is very high, so if money isn't an issue I would say why not, but if it is, it might be better not to waste the money on a long shot.

I know my GPA and MCAT are just mediocre but I actually have pretty amazing ECs. It was heartbreaking to hear that they don't even look at it...

Are you sure about this. If so... I'll be really sad...

Unfortunately yes, for OOP applicants - I believe someone posted a link in the accepted/rejected/waitlisted thread that shows MUN's application review process. For IP they do a holistic review before interview, so people with much lower GPA and MCAT scores can still get interviews if they have amazing ECs. To be clear, your stats would be fine for many schools (including MUN if you were IP), but for the competitiveness of these seats I'm not sure if it would be worth the money (again, if money is an issue). But if you were to get an interview, your strong ECs could be pretty influential in your post-interview score.

It's your decision in the end, but lately there have been lots of frustrated/disappointed OOP applicants on these forums who were unaware of the OOP review process before they applied, so I figured you would rather know about that sooner rather than later :) You should definitely call MUN and check to be sure, but they likely will say that the applicant pool changes from year to year (which is true) so it would be hard to get a clear answer!
