Course Load

Recommended Posts

How does u Ottawa judge a full course load when you come from the credit system? (ie. 30 credits/year is considered full course load at my school).

In my case I did

1st year: 31 credits

summer: 9 credits

2nd year 31 credits

3rd year 28 credits

And do they not count the credits from courses taken via distance ed?

they don't count distance ed. (so if that 28 credit year has distance ed. then you can't apply) you need a minimum of 5 courses per semester generally. You can take 4 courses/semester if you have summer courses to make up for those 2 missing courses. Overall it all should amount to 5/5 courses per year (or 30 credits without distance ed.).

Yes I believe that is the case. I believe you can take summer courses and 'add them onto a given year' PROVIDED you at least took 4 lecture based (NOT ONLINE) courses per semester in that given year with the deficit. Basically you want your 3 years to add up to 5 and 5 per semester every year and never fall below four 3-credit in class courses in ANY given semester.

This year I have 3.5 courses that are lecture based and 1.5 courses which are online (5 credits altogether). Will that count as a full course load?

Unfortunately, Ottawa won't count that year.

Here is what they sent me:

"In order for the academic year to count towards the WGPA calculation, a maximum of one online graded course per semester may be completed in accordance with the five full-year courses/year requirement."

I don't think so. When I inquired about online courses, they said that they're not part of a full course load. You can take up to one per semester and still be considered full time (because then it would still be 4 full courses for one year), but anything beyond that would not be considered full time. I hope that helps!

Okay, so 1 of the online courses I am taking is a full year anatomy credit (can't drop this). The other is a 1/2 credit bird course in 2nd semester. If I drop the half credit course and take a lecture based course, will that give me the suitable 5 credit full course load, which is required for Ottawa's wGPA calculation? WIll I have to take summer courses to make up for the 1 credit online course, despite having the full course load.

Also, does taking 1 credit in online courses out of a 5 credit full course load have a negative repercussion for any other Canadian med school (both in and outside Ontario). Thanks, I really appreciate the responses.

Dropping the second semester online course is a great plan, and will put you back on the right track for the Ottawa requirements. I don't believe the online courses are used in the wGPA calculation, but I think they still recognize the credit value, so you won't have to take any more courses to make up for it (and actually, they don't count summer courses, either). I'd like to think you won't be at a disadvantage for taking online courses. At some universities (mine included), certain mandatory courses are ONLY offered online. Perhaps someone else knows more definitively, though?
