Thoughts Of Taking English In Msc Program (Help!)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I am entering my 2nd year of my MSc and I am thinking about taking English (6.0 credits) to open up my chances to UBC and the U.S. - however I am worried that doing this may put my GPA at risk, does anyone know if the grade in English during my MSc will count towards my UG GPA?

I haven't been able to find much information on this. I am going to try calling schools this week and the next to confirm, but just wondering if anyone on here has done such a thing and can lend some insight!!

Thanks!

The English during your MSc will definitely be counted towards the UBC english requirement. I ask the UBC Admissions office not to long ago with the same question in terms of whether or not the english requirement can be done after your undergraduate degree: non-degree term & graduate studies. They said that as long as the english requirement is acceptable and transferable to UBC then it can be done in a non-degree term or during graduate studies.

That is good news, but my bigger concern is whether or not taking English during my MSc will be counted in the way Ontario schools calculate my GPA. I am unsure whether or not taking an undergraduate course during a professional program will actually be weighted in GPA calculations.

Ah, in terms of Ontario Schools, it will count to your Undergrad cGPA at all schools. However, it will not affect your eligibility for the best/recent 2-year weighting for Western and Queens as they only consider the best/recent 2 years of your undergraduate that are completed on a full-time basis and it should not affect your Ottawa wGPA as they only considered the most recent 3 years prior to completion of your undergraduate bachelors degree. In other words, they won't be included in your best wGPA possible for Queens, Western, and Ottawa. McMaster takes your cGPA of all undergraduate courses no matter when they are taken. The only one I can't answer is the eligibility of UofT's wGPA so you should double check with them.

If a course is required for your Master's degree, it would generally be considered graduate work and not counted as part of your cGPA for medical school. McMaster does consider all undergraduate-level work for an applicant's cGPA, but if you're getting credit towards a graduate degree, I do not believe they would count those courses, regardless of what level they're typically given.

If a course is taken concurrently with your Master's degree, but is not part of the degree itself, that's where things get a bit murky. Some schools may count that in your cGPA if it's clear those courses are independent from your graduate work. In that case, I would contact the individual schools for confirmation, that's a rather unique situation that only they would be able to adequately clarify.

Ah I see that makes sense, that you for that clarification. I will contact the schools and also talk directly with my MSc supervisor to see if he can provide any input.

Much thanks

University of Toronto – MSc courses not looked at for GPA calculation (only those in FT studies)

University of Ottawa – English would not go towards the wGPA calculation

Queen’s University – Enroll in UG course, used in GPA calculation (cGPA) but not wGPA

Dalhousie – all good, wont effect wGPA

McMaster – the grade will count towards cGPA

Western – unsure, but possibly

UBC - will count the year after (not during the year applying)

I am really considering the cost vs. reward for taking English. It is $1300, 6.0 credits - but I will open up UBC and U.S.

Gahhh i dont know what to do

Thanks! So all good except western..but I always thought their best two years have to be full time.

Obviously your decision at the end, but it seems like it might be worth it- if English is all you need to apply to US. I'm in a similar position, but have to take physics & english to apply to US.

I ended up choosing to do it, will be applying to UBC this cycle and if no dice in Canada, I will open up options in the states

Best of luck :D
