Ken2099
I am arranging observerships in radiology. How does someone get a feel for the practice, and impress staff enough for reference letters, while in the passive role of an observer?
Lactic Folly
To answer each in turn: 1) Ask thoughtful questions. 2) Keen, knowledgeable, socially aware students make the best impression. 3) Observerships do not usually make the best reference letters. If at all possible, try to write up a case or do a project with someone for an enriched letter.
W0lfgang
Don't ask too many questions though.
Lactic Folly
Haha. See: socially aware. It's definitely a tough balance - ask too few and come across as disinterested, ask too many, and, well... However, I hope that a focus on thoughtful questions will guide students to the optimal number. It's not as easy to come up with a string of them, at least for me... Ken2099
The observership processes at many university hospitals requires that I find a staff in the department who will allow me to observe them. I would appreciate it if anyone here could PM me recommendations of attendings at your hospitals that would be good to observe and connect with. One question or so is fine - and only if you actually have a question of course
medicallyinclined
How about an Interventional Radiology Observership? I have an upcoming IGT observership and I'm very excited/nervous. Any recommendations on stuff to read up on?
Lactic Folly
To start: http://www.svuhradiology.ie/ For more: Demystifying Interventional Radiology: A Guide for Medical Students http://link.springer...8-3-319-17238-5 Probably more than you need for an observership: Interventional Radiology: A Survival Guide (Kessel) and Learning Vascular and Interventional Radiology (Munoz) Since it's IR, it would also be helpful to know about sterile technique if you haven't been in the OR yet (i.e. where to stand and where to keep your hands).
