5Th Year Or Special Year

Hey guys,

 

I am currently finishing my undergrad and I was wondering, is there a difference if I graduate and do a special year or if I don't graduate and do a fifth year?  Any repercussions?

Yes, there is a difference. I was contemplating a similar option about 2 years ago (decided to do grad school instead). There are specific course requirements for the special year at some medical schools (e.g. UWO has requirements about you not taking any first year, repeat, or second year courses w/o first year prerequisites in the special year). Whereas delaying graduation typically doesn't have any bearing on the course requirements for the year other than what your own school might require.

 

Look into what restrictions other schools might have (I don't believe McMaster, for what it's worth, has any specific requirements for a "special" year vs 5th year). You also might get some answers by talking to the BMSc undergrad office or whatever your equivalent faculty office is for advice.
