Ophtho Specialty

Hey guys, 

I'm a second year medstudent and was interested in finding out more about ophtho, since in our school we dont get exposed to it much.  

 

I have heard so many negative things about it such as: 

jobs are almost impossible to find; 

Fellowships are a must 

The junior staffs get no OR time, and if they did, it'll be only 1-2 days a month 

the overhead is about 40-50% 

 

Can you please elaborate a bit about the advantages and disadvantages of ophtho, the lifestyle (calls, regular daily hours), Net salary (hospital practive, vs private vs a combined practice), competitiveness in matching,...

I'd like to hear more about that as well. There isn't much info on the forums. Some people make it seem terrible (for the above reasons), while others make it seems like the perfect residency/lifestyle/income specialty.

 

CMA's average salary is pretty high, so I wonder how that mesh's with the extreme lack of OR time that people have been talking about lately.

no or time kills the salary...but u can get it with seniority.

make sure u enjoy it, cuz if ur not gonna get or time ur gonna be miserable

How much would the pay be if you get no OR time?

what the normal working hours are?

are there any non-elective surgeries that you can easily get OR time with?

Can you perform elective surgeries in less busy hospitals? or in private clinics? So much ambiguity with this specialty. . .

Being a surgeon without OR time would be a terrible career. You'd see people work them up and when you get to the fun part (operating), hand them off to someone else.

Would that be something that is going to change in the next 10 years? I failed to find any report/studies elaborating on how the opportunities would change apart from a few papers reporting that the population is aging, and there would be increased need for ophthalmologists in the future ...
