Australian Jho Job Prospects (After Intership)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I'm currently an intern in Australia and I just wanted to let everyone know about the prospects of finding a job in Australia after internship (particularly JHO positions). Things have drastically changed here and many interns that are about to successfully complete internship do not have jobs for next year (2017) to work as a JHO (Junior House Officer). Just to summarize the system in Australia for those that aren't aware, it is as follows:

med student

(resident) - Intern (PGY1)

resident - Junior House Officer, JHO (PGY2)

resident - Senior House Officer, SHO (PGY3)

resident - Principal House Officer, PHO (PGY4 and up)

registrar (you are a registrar once you are accepted into a training program, e.g. surgery, ED, Medicine, etc.) (PGY... # variable)

Australia has increased intake into medical schools (I believe mostly in QLD) and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find jobs. Places that were undersubscribed for 2016 are now oversubscribed and there are JHOs on the waitlist and have no job for 2017. Places like Alice Spings (Northern Territory) used to have difficulty attracting JHOs (and other positions like SHOs, PHOs, etc), and now they are full and rejecting JHOs. Cairns (QLD) used to offer subsidies to attract JHOs, and now they are also rejecting many candidates.

If you are currently a medical student in Australia, or if you are considering coming to Australia for medicine, you should have back-up plans in order to find a job outside of Australia once you complete medicine. You should also not expect to specialize in Australia (it is an option, but it should not be regarded as an expectation that you will be successful). If you come to Australia for medicine, ensure you sit exams for other countries (where ever you wish to apply) and you should be attaining above-average scores. I would also suggest that you become involved in research in order to optimize your references you need to find a job.

I hope I'm not causing stress with this post, but I think it's important you are aware of the competitive job market that exists after you complete your degree. There are people with significant loans and they don't have a job.
