(Casper) Whoa, Feel Like I Got Wrecked

Recommended Posts

Just finished CASPer and felt like I sort of got wrecked.

I couldn't really finish the last questions properly sometimes.

Most of the answers for the other questions were often located in my first answer (I elaborate a lot and type sort of fast).

Did anyone else feel like this but still get accepted?

I felt like that last year, and got an interview, with average GPA and MCAT. A lot of my answers last year for the third question were like one sentence or got cut off. Don't stress about it! I don't think that will necessarily be the deciding factor in your score, the most important thing is quality of responses!

You sound pretty well off, actually, if you're the type of person who naturally likes to elaborate, and have a typing speed to match it. I'm kinda sitting here thinking whether I would end up flagged on one of the situations  :(

I feel like the quality of my responses is usually "meh". Like in essays, I always have this problem where I can go on and on about something but the actual argument is kind of mediocre. :( Guess I'll have to wait and see.

Hi everyone,

I think it's important that this isn't like our conventional exam where how we felt about our answers is somewhat correlated with how well we studied and remembered what we needed to remember.

Though ironic, our feelings are irrelevant to how we do on the test as it is all in hands of the markers.

But congratulations everyone! Try and look at the positive! All applicants are finished with the CASPer for another year!

I suggest we do a little victory dance and celebrate any little accomplishment in our long, torturous journey! Who's with me?! *initiates conga line*

Lots of love,

I had a similar experience to this. My third response for many sections was BAD. Cut off sentences and unfinished ideas (and short). Also in one section I think I misunderstood the prompt a little and did not respond to one of the questions exactly as they were expecting. I feel crushed right now. Overall CASPer was a mixed bag for me. Some responses were great, others were unfinished/underdeveloped. I'm wondering how many other people feel like this? That a decent number of your responses were inadequate... some as short as two sentences.

My CARS is 129 and my cGPA is 3.85 so I thought I was okay in that department but now that I've messed up CASPer I don't know where I stand. :(

That's actually a really good CARS score and a solid GPA though (above average, for last year at least). The CASPer is really a mixed bag, I feel like for most cases there is no way to know how it'll turn out unless you know someone that was a marker or until you get a invite. Think positively! At least 2/3 of your application is solid!

Me too! And there wasn't enough time to relocate my answer to the proper section, so I had to either just leave it and try to re-type some of it, or would refer to my above answer. Which made a lot of my 3rd questions very short...

I'm not sure how I truly feel about the Casper, but then again I guess no one truly does without being able to see a grade.

My question is, what do you guys consider to be a long answer? I feel like my long answers weren't that long, unless I was on a really good roll and could just bang out the idea I was currently on. Those ones were probably a solid paragraph, but everything else I considered to be "long" (i.e. not a quick sentence) were only 3-4 sentences or so.

I didn't overall feel like my answers were bad, and I felt confident my solutions/ideas, but then again I won't know until later because maybe it didn't have the substance that they were looking for. I have a lower GPA, 3.66, a 128 CAR, and a 1% bonus for my M.Sc, so a good casper score is necessary for me.

did you feel that some questions were repetitive?

also several of the last questions yesterday (8pm) could easily be answered with 1-2 sentences imo so its not too bad!

I did feel that some questions were repetitive (also 8 pm), particularly the passage based ones. I'm glad to hear that at least one other person felt that shorter answers were all that was required!

Thanks, I am definitely going to try to stay positive. I wish I was just more confident in my answers for CASPer... the waiting/anxiety is going to kill me. Good luck if you're applying :)

I'm sort of a noobie and will apply next year.

I've been reading about Casper and talking with people and getting mixed reviews on what they look for.

I did a few practice tests and was told to incorporate key words like "this situation presents a conflict of interest" and "this case highlights the concept of autonomy" then explain the different viewpoints present. Then another person said it is better to highlight one side and explain deeply why you support that side and not spend time defining the viewpoints. Another told me it is fine to use lay terms as long as you come across explaining your position thoroughly.

Any advice on how people approach this game?

Honestly, I feel like it's fairly variable. In my mind, CaSPER is basically an online MMI, so it depends on who marks your answers and what their preference is. in general, it is a good idea to highlight the ethical dilemma at the beginning (conflict of interest, confidentiality). Explore both sides of the dilemmas, but be sure to pick a side if the question asks you to. And layterms are fine.

Edit: Also, everyone I know felt brutal after CaSPER, regardless of whether they landed an interview or not. I also flubbed the third question on each prompt a lot when I wrote it, spending a bit too much time on the first 2. Hopefully that reassures some people!
