Uottawa's Full Course Load

Recommended Posts

Hi I was wondering if a course distribution like this

Fall:

3 courses

Winter

5 courses

TOTAL: 4 full-year courses or 8 half year courses

Is this acceptable for consideration as an academic year with a full course load?

Hey there, I would want to let you know that you don't have a full course load in your case as you still need 5 FCE/year for Ottawa.

However, Ottawa is willing to accept the academic year with 4 FCE/year as long they can replace the missing 1.0 FCE from another academic year or summer session. In your case, the year is still acceptable as long as you can replace the missing 1.0FCE.

Please refer to what they have on their eligibility section on their website, I've bolded what you need to know:

Applications will be accepted from students in good standing who will have successfully completed, prior to the beginning of June preceding registration, in a recognized university, three years of full-time studies (five full-year course/year) in any undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree, including specific prerequisite courses:

  • One full year course (or two semester courses) in General Biology including laboratory session;
  • One full year course (or two semester courses) in Humanities / Social Sciences;
  • The equivalent of two full-year courses (or four semester courses) of the following Chemistry courses: i) General Biochemistry without laboratory session; ii) General Chemistry with laboratory session; iii) Organic Chemistry with laboratory session.

A full-time academic year where the equivalent of four (4) full-year courses is taken is accepted and counted in the WGPA calculation only if the missing course/credit is completed either as an additional course within another academic year or as a summer course. Individual courses taken during a summer session are accepted for the credit value in this instance however the mark obtained is not counted in the calculation of the WGPA. Any year with less than four full-year courses will not count as a full-time year of study. A full-time summer semester does not replace a semester of studies within an academic year. AP, IB and transfer credits are not recognized as fulfilment of full time studies requirement.

Hi I had a similar problem. Your first semester does not meet the qualifications for a full course load. A full course load is considered 5 a semester for a total of 10 courses. They will still except a total of 8 but it has to be 4 a semester and the other 2 need to be made up later. Because your first semester only had 3 courses (i.e. a part-time course load) the entire year doesn't count. I had this happen as I was unable to write an exam for medical reasons and had to drop the course. This left me with a semester worth 3.5 credits. Even though I had 5.5 credits the other semester Ottawa discounted my entire year. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! Best of luck
