Help With Fm Electives As Oop To Toronto!

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if any current clinical clerks (MSI3-4's) could provide insight into the following FM electives:

1 - Family Medicine - Health of the Homeless (Family Medicine / Health of the Homeless)

2 - Family Medicine - Inner City Health (Family Medicine / Inner City Health)

Both elective locations have not been listed yet so I'm not sure what kind of facilities I'll be working in. I was also curious to see if the preceptors will be present long enough to observe my clinical ability and provide reference letters at the end of the rotation?

I did the Health of the Homeless elective a few years ago. I am not sure if it has changed since then. However, basically this elective is all self-driven. You choose which clinics and homeless shelters you want to work at. It can be a different preceptor at each clinic and shelter, as it was for me. You can schedule yourself at the same clinic for multiple days, in order to try to get to work with the same preceptor, but it is not guaranteed. I spent a decent amount of time at the Inner City FHT on Queen St. E, and it was different preceptors depending on the day of the week. It is advised that you do spend time at different places so that you get a feel of how medical care is provided to the disadvantaged (lower socioeconomic, refugees, new immigrants) and homeless populations. On some days, clinic day might be slow because the patients (clients) may not show up for their appointments, and so your day just ends early. Overall, on days when there was patients/clients to see, it was very valuable, however it can be unstructured at times, which you have to be okay with.

  • 3 weeks later...

I completed the Inner City Health Elective.  It is a three week rotation with 3 half days at the Homeless Shelter (Seaton House) - where you work with patients in the Infirmary.  It was almost like an Internal Medicine ward rather than Family Medicine.  You take care of them for three weeks then hand over to the next person.  The rest of the time, you are working with a group of physicians located the 410 Sherbourne.  You'll probably work with each of them for 4 half days over the three weeks.  They compile their evaluations together.  I was able to get feedback from preceptors because they're very acquainted to teaching - and did end up receiving a reference letter from the elective coordinator. I am interview at Toronto for FM but I am from Toronto as well with three letters from Toronto Family Physicians.
