Hospital Pharmacy Vs. Retail Pharmacy

Hi everyone,

What are the differences in terms of duties/responsibilities for both hospital and retail pharmacy?

As well, can anyone provide a description of what a day in the life of a hospital pharmacist is like compared to a retail pharmacist?

Thanks in advance.

Different pharmacists serve different roles.  There's a lot of nuances that would take literally a whole book to write about the differences, but in terms of the actual healthcare and thinking portion, all pharmacists are involved in the drug therapies of their patients. On any given day (or day-to-day if you're a clinical pharmacist) you are assessing a patient's drug regimen for suitability, safety, and efficacy.  That is your primary objective as a pharmacist; clinical specialists also act in a consulting role to aid physicians with making the right decision in terms of drug selection and are also trained to perform assessments to help them make that decision.

Otherwise, lots of commonality exists in terms of a pharmacist's day, regardless of type: lots of documentation and/or data entry, medication reviews, preparation of medications, patient interviewing, and contacting with other healthcare providers.

Hope this gives you a general idea of what pharmacists do.
