Toronto Family Medicine New Grad

How are the job prospects for new FM grads in the GTA?  How is the income?  Is it worth it for a new grad?

There are recruiters saying that you can bill $40k per month before overhead and there are others saying that you'll be lucky to bill $25k.  How true is this?  What hours would one have to work to make this type of income?

remember doing an elective in one of the community hospitals in GTA speaking with family med residents training there. They mention being offered jobs in the GTA/surrounding area for ~$800/day as locum (clinic coverage) or as hospitalist.

This was a few years ago though, so idk if it is change now.

That's lower than I expected. With five eight hour days a week during 11 months of work a year, you're making 123 000 after 30 percent overhead.

With 100k of debt to pay off, the opportunity cost of school and training (lost years of income generation), saving for retirement, paying for things that would have been covered by benefits, and paying taxes, I question the worth of that trade for that income.

have to be careful with some calculations with locums - it isn't unusual for those NOT to have overhead. Too complicated, you are just covering the clinic etc

Plus you would expect to earn less not taking on yet the responsibility of your own roster :) They are stepping stone positions (not unlike many other fields - medicine is the very rare case where you jump after training to quickly reach maximum income almost automatically).
