How Does One Prep For Md/phd Interview

Hi everyone,

With the MD/PhD interviews rolling out from all of the schools, I was just wondering how one prepares for an MD/PhD interview?

I understand that there is an obvious component of knowing your own publications/involvements as well as knowing why you want to do an MD/PhD, but what about the MMI and the panel?

Should applicants/interviewees prepare differently?

There are also more diversity in the way different schools interview applicants and if there are any MD/PhD out there that have interviewed at multiple schools and could break down how each interviewed their applicants I'd really appreciate it!

I am driving blind here, i.e., no experience with applyinmg for PhD, but I would have thought there are 2 separate interviews, after all, it is entirely possible you will be accepted for one and not the other, e.g., accepted into med school but not the PhD program. I only mention this as your question seems to imply there is only one interview.

For MMI, I took the position that this was meant to be a fun experience, I considered that I had prepared for the MMI my entire life, i.e., the sum total of my life experiences were my prep for the MMI and I went in unrehearsed to be myself.

I apologize for not being more articulate. So the MD/PhD interviews are very school dependent. Some schools have an MMI and Panel, where as others have pure MMI's. Also some schools only interview and fill for MD/PhD spots. You would interview for the MD/PhD program to be considered for the MD/PhD and would need an interview invite and be interviewed separately for the MD program to be considered for the MD program.

 

I have had previous MMI's for MD programs, but was wondering if and how MD/PhD interviews were different (besides asking about your research and career endeavours).

I used a service where you can meet one-on-one with a medical student and practice MMI scenarios and I found that very helpful

 

That service didn't happen to be medcoach, did it?  Just a wild guess on my part...

Like you said, MD/PhD interview structures depends on each school. Really, what you should concern yourself with is just preparing for the MD interviews, because each school is going to make you go through the same structured MD interview as all the MD applicants. Most schools will also have an MD/PhD component where you can pretty much guess what they're going to ask...more questions related to your research and your suitability for MD/PhD.
