Would It Be Worth To Be On A Varsity Team For Just 1 Year, And Then Ask The Coach To Be A Referral/reference?

Recommended Posts

would 1 year be too soon? or would it be a good referral/ref after just 1 year of knowing the coach? this would be for queens + other unis. I'm guessing the coach mite say it would be too soon.

also, whats the difference b/w a referral and a reference? silly question but I thought they were the same thing.

thanks

What do you mean be on a varsity team? As a player? Athletic trainer? I was on my schools team as an athletic trainer and it was certainly enough time to get to know the coach well enough to be a reference of mine although i dont think a hockey coach would be a good professional reference, if youre applyingn to PT i would get a PT for a reference for sure.

Yes as a varsity athlete for 1 year, like soccer. Would the coach be a good reference? Cus I heard some unis like Queen's like varsity athletes.

a PT would be a good reference?

how will I get that? Like Just volunteering with them at a clinic? Shadow? What else can I do with a PT to get a reference later?

Thanks

I`ve never been accepted so if anyone else wants to correct me they can but the schools in Ontario at least are looking for an academic reference and a professional reference so I personally wouldn`t use someone as a reference when I was player like a coach as I feel like it be more beneficial to volunteer with a physio and have them as a reference but I could be wrong. Also, there are tons of opportunities to volunteer with physiotherapists. Look into it. You can job shadow, be a physio assistant, etc. I would just recommend displaying interest towards a physiotherapist or a clinic by calling or emailing and see if you can come in to shadow a physiotherapist for a few hours and start from there. I have heard that Queen`s likes varsity athletes but I have also heard that Queen`s like to see people who have experienced the entire profession of physio (i.e. neuro- , musculoskeletal conditions etc.) and working with various populations so try to volunteer in more than one physio clinic/ hospital if possible, the more the better. Any other questions don`t hesitate to ask, I don`t know every question but I`ll try my best!

hmm yes.. and academic and professional reference would probably not fit a coach.

And yes, for volunteer for pt..variety is key ;)

have you been a physio assistant? Anyone else reading this, have you been a physio assistant? What's it like? What do you do/have done?

I plan on shadowing/volunteering with an orthopaedic (so MSk) pt and another type sometime later, so I can hopefully become PT assiant as I think volunteering with a physio would be good exp for PTA, though I don't know whats really required to be a PTA, gonna email some clinics to find out.

So if I become a varsity athlete and apply for queens, where would I talk about that experience? where do i put it on my application? personal statement?

I've never applied yet for pt and won't for a while so I don't know what an application looks like. I know i'll probably see the answer right away once I actually look at the application and all the forms to be filled, but that won't be for awhile.

thanks for help!

I have volunteered as a physio assistant and I did a lot of therapeutic modalities, exercises, and stretching on patients. I would certainly recommend volunteering as a Physio assistant if the opportunity comes up as I loved it and it was a great experience! It is a really good way to build your profession/ communication skills while putting in hours relevant to phyisotherapy. And for Queen`s PT, you could talk about being a varsity athlete on the personal submission section. You have like 2000 characters for one question to explain why you want to be a physio and your understanding of the profession and you could definitely tie your varsity experience into that. There is also two other questions that ask your other experiences so there`s a couple opportunities to talk about being a varsity athlete.
