Uoft Interview Invites/regrets 2017

TIME STAMP: Jan/13 @ 3:27pm

 

Interview Date: Feb 25 (MD/PhD), Feb 26 (MD)

Result: Invite

cGPA: 3.97 (OMSAS)

MCAT: 520 (131/129/129/131)

 

ECs: 3 years research (3 1st author pubs; 3 1st author under review; conference; invitation to scientific meeting, etc.); 4 years personal training with clinical/rural/general population; designed/implemented exercise programs for rural residents and cancer survivors; VP and P of student club; managed restaurant for 2 summers; 6 years tutoring; additional volunteer, awards, and employment.

 

Essays: Feel I overthought them and crammed too much detail into 250 words...

Year: 5th year UG (Co-op)

Geography: IP

Result: Invite
wGPA: 3.94
MCAT: 520 (131, 127, 132, 130)
ECs: 1 year in engineering lab, 3 years in molecular bio lab. bunch of leadership. very little clinical volunteering
Essays: Wrote them the night before  :rolleyes:

ECs: Just send a PM! 3 first author publications.  A few conferences. 3MT Finalist (CAGS). Research internships abroad. 
Essays: Wrote them the week of. A few spelling mistakes. It happens!

ECs: Campus response team, hospice volunteering, choir, TAing, NSERC USRAs. Lots of long term things. 
Essays: I made sure to use all the key words and to refer to the U of T cluster things.

ECs: 2 pubs, varsity basketball, TA, RA, coaching, etc. 
Essays: Put in a ton of effort, trying to hit all the clusters.

Interview Date: March 25, but have to reschedule it since it conflicts with another interview
Location: IP 
wGPA: 3.98 

MCAT: Met cutoffs

Current year: 4th year UG
ECs: Average - some research (no pubs, but a patent and a couple of poster presentations), some extracurriculars in the university, hospital volunteering, TA position, other unique activities.

Essays: Was quite happy with them. Worked on them for a month and had them reviewed by a few people

wGPA: 3.9-3.95ish (I'm from BC and don't feel like converting)
Year: completed Bachelor's in 2016

MCAT: 517
ECs: vaguely: - research (undergrad and hospital) with one publication + conferences (undergrad, graduate, international), job with leadership/managerial role in personal care, employment throughout studies, volunteering history, sports (all amateur/recreational)
Essays: May or may not have run out of time on these... so I'm shocked to have been invited. The majority were complete, the rest...

Holy! I'm super stoked for this opportunity. I really did not think I was gonna get an interview because of my GPA but I guess there is still hope  :)

Year: Masters in Geography from 2012, been working for non-profits ever since

MCAT: Met cutoffs
ECs: A lot of nonprofit work experience in social justice, food security and health, research experience (qualitative) in undergrad and masters with one publication, very involved in community volunteering for many years
Essays: Felt really good about them, worked very hard

Interview Date: April 9th

wGPA: ~3.99

Year: completed two UG (3.99 GPA in both): Engineering and Math/Stats

MCAT: Above cutoffs (12VR,10BS,12PS)

ECs: Very diverse. Some research, some non-clinical volunteering, diverse employment (PM me for more details. My work experience is unique - mostly engineering)

Essays: Spent quite a long time on them (learned after failed app to Toronto before). Tied responses heavily to personal experiences and values.

Year: 4th year UG

MCAT: 515 (128 CARS, 131 B/B, 127 P/S, 129 C/P)

EC's: Below Average to Average (IMO); with senior home volunteering, leadership roles x 4 in various clubs, co-op position, and other stuff tapped into each cluster.
Essays: Spent at least 2-3 months, always tied to personal experiences. Multiple edits by professional school and close friends.

wGPA: 3.91 (cgpa < 3.8)

Year: 2nd year MSc

MCAT: 12/10/14

EC's: Average - hospital volunteering, leadership roles in various clubs and employment, and lots of research (but no first author pub)
Essays: Spent at least 2 weeks on it. Multiple edits by family and friends.

ECs: Pretty solid; slightly lower on research productivity (pubs/presentations) though


Essays: I think I am a decent writer, thought they were okay.

This was pretty expected. Time to focus on other interviews!

ECs: Thought that they were okay at first. Given the turn of events I think they could be significantly better
Essays: Thought that they were great and spoke to each cluster. Had people check it over and see if it was any good. They thought it was.

Essays: Very happy with two of them, disliked the other two

Can't say I'm not disappointed, but it's at least nice to know!
