Questions Regarding Admission

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have 2 questions:

1) I applied for this year. When will we get the answer for invitation/rejection for an interview ? Last year it was around january 30.

2) Do they look at your bachelor to decide weither they accept you or not ? I know they officialy don't look at it, but still, I think when you look at the number of persons from each program, it seems to be every year the same.

I speak english and french actually so answer in the language you want.

Thank you :)

1) They do not tell us, just use last year as a bench mark. Probably next week.

2) I am confused. Do you mean do they look at your undergraduate degree? Then yes, either last 3 or 2 years depending on if you are in 4th year (or graduate, another UG degree, graduate degree) or are in 3rd year at the time of application, respectively.

"The mark used at the various steps in the selection process is the weighted grade point average (WGPA), the calculation of which is calculated based on the applicants most recent three years of full-time undergraduate studies completed towards a bachelors degree in any recognized University"

Thanks for the answer.

2) no, I meant to they look at the nature of your bachelor (for example: they will prefer you if you did biochemestry over mathematics) ? Again, I know they adocially don't care, but maybe they still select lile this.

I don't think so. I go to Ottawa and there are people in my class with all types of undergrad degrees from many schools in Canada.

They actually have two conflicting things, so I'm genuinely not sure :

The first (in Application Process - Eligibility):

Furthermore, in selecting students, the Admissions Committee reserves the right to assess, in the applicant's program, the level of difficulty of completed courses and their relevance to future medical studies at the University of Ottawa; the Committee also considers the candidate’s results in these courses.

The second (IN FAQ):

There is no special weight or preference given to any particular baccalaureate degree completed at a recognized university.  The degree of difficulty of the program is not assessed.

In conclusion, no idea.

I understand your question, m_jacob_45 asks if there's a certain quota for different programs to make sure they have diversity. Maybe otherwise, everyone that would get in would only come from like Biomedical Sciences.

Honestly, I've asked myself the same question.

I didn't ask that, don't know if you confused me with another poster. Basically, in my class there are some people from biomed, but there are people from literally all disciplines and schools. If I had to guess, I would say the biggest group of kids is from Mac health sci.

Thanks for the answers. Do they also apply the following statement for the french stream ?

"Furthermore, in selecting students, the Admissions Committee reserves the right to assess, in the applicant's program, the level of difficulty of completed courses and their relevance to future medical studies at the University of Ottawa; the Committee also considers the candidate’s results in these courses."

My inference is that they don't assess the nature of your degree, but will penalize you if you say, take all second year courses. Or maybe say, somehow only take classes that all have A+ averages.

Doubt it. I know of successful applicants who have done this.

Thanks! Can you please find me where in the website they say it (for the french stream) ? It's been 4 hours I look for it and don't find it. And, 1994, me too it surprises me because in the time I was applying (like 1-2 years ago), they didn't have this policy, so it may have changed recently...

"Pendant l'étude des candidatures, le Comité d'admission se réserve le droit d'évaluer le niveau de difficulté des cours suivis et la pertinence de ces cours comme préparation aux études médicales.  Les résultats obtenus sont aussi pris en considération." under "Critères d’admissibilité"

this could simply be an escape clause for them if someone in their mind has unfairly manipulated the system - whenever you put in a fixed rule people have a tendency to find a way to get around it (obeying the letter but not the spirit of the law ha). This allows them to block that.
