hopefulApplicant
For English stream applicants that indicated bilingualism, is there a French fluency test or something on the day of the interview? Just wanted to get a sense of what to expect and if there's any standard protocol about this.
ThatMedGyal
During the interview, they'll ask you 1-2 questions in french. They'll evaluate your fluency (I believe in a pass/fail manner) by the way you respond.
hopefulApplicant
Thank you! So are the questions fairly rote or do they require more specialized vocabulary, without asking too much? Would it be worthwhile to brush up on vocabulary if I'm fairly confident in speaking otherwise?
EthicsForBreakfast
I would also like to know about this! I am definitely bilingual after 13 years of schooling but I'll also be nervous and a little rusty! Hopefully they aren't complicated medical questions :S
Cytosine
If you're able to have a normal conversation with a person who speaks only French, then you should most likely be okay.
Belle_MD
Doesn't hurt to brush up - one thing I did while prepping was wrote down some typical med school interview questions and translated my responses into French, just to be safe. I have years of French immersion but definitely struggle sometimes to find the right words in French...I would recommend practicing, none of us can say for certain what type of question(s) you will be asked! rmorelan
Historically the questions were not too complex - it doesn't take much to see if the person you are talking to can speak french. That being said brushing up so you are not going in cold if it has been a while is not a bad idea.
hopefulApplicant
Thank you guys! That's reassuring, because just translating questions and trying to answer in French is how I'm practicing right now, too.
AKPE
Where did you indicate that you were bilingual? Was it just under the general language info on the OMSAS application (you checked both languages spoken) or was there a specific option in the Ottawa part of the application to say bilingual? I am also wondering if what you actually say during this "french test" counts towards you interview score or is it just to see if you are bilingual or not? Thanks!
