Interview Coming Up-How To Answer Why Us Vs. Canadian Med Schools

Hey everyone,

I have a US MD interview coming up, and as a Canadian, I know that I will be asked about why I decided to apply for US MD schools at the interview. The honest answer would be cuz I obviously want to maximize my chances but that's not an appropriate answer. So I was wondering what would be some advantages of pursuing medicine in the States instead of staying in Canada.

Thanks,

I think(?) the obvious answer might be that you prefer to practice medicine where the government role is minimized, i.e., socialized medicine in Canada vs private enterprise essentially in USA. They might like that answer. :P  And so the answer goes, as you wish to practice in US, you feel it more advantageous to study med in US.

You can also spin that question off as a "why our school" question on top of what Bambi said. Maybe their curriculum caters better to what you were looking for than what's here in Canada or you like their facilities better (i.e. SIM centres or standardized patients and such). I also mentioned, and truthfully as well, that it did not matter where I practiced medicine; a patient is a patient, really. Doesn't matter if they're Canadian or American, for me anyways. Good luck!

Also, just to say, most interviewers will know that it is incredibly difficult to get in to a Canadian school... they may or may not acknowledge that in the interview. If they bring it up, focus on it being a numbers game:

- there are no private medical universities

- most students are only in province at one or two places

- out of province schools often limit spots to OOP students to 15% of the class
