Competency Of Admissions Staff

Recommended Posts

Hello,

This might be a stupid question but how confident should I be of the admission staff's ability to correctly tally my GPA? I took 11 courses in my 4th year following the 3/5 rule, so my lowest course mark should be dropped. The problem is that if they drop my lowest course my GPA will be 3.98, and if they don't it will be 3.84, so in either case my GPA will be above the cutoff, meaning I have no way of knowing if they correctly calculated my GPA or not. Should I give them a call to make sure?

Thanks

The admissions team will take a look at your transcript and calculate your GPA according to their rules. They take their jobs very seriously, which is why it can take so long for interviews and then admissions to be offered. I do not think you need to contact them to ensure they've done their jobs.

Is there any way for us to find out what they calculated for our GPA?

there is not - but actually there has to be a computer involved in all of this - that is the ENTIRE point of inputting the grades after all.

I may not trust a human - I would trust the automated system (that has been in use for years, validated........)

I'd still feel a lot better about life if I had some way of confirming.

Thanks for your help everyone

Worst case scenario here is that you still have an excellent chance at admissions, largely based on your interview performance.

Please keep in mind that every single person who applies could theoretically have their GPA miscalculated, yet none of them have easy access to their GPAs either. While it may feel like it, this is not a situation unique to you. Without reason to believe the school has erred, pre-emptively contacting the school to double-check their work on a step of the application process that applies to everyone, insinuating incompetence on their part, is not something I would advise.

Western, like all medical schools, tries to ensure a fair, by-the-rules admissions process. I had a situation where had they not adhered to their own grade considerations exactly, I would not have gotten even an interview. It all went fine. Focus on the aspect of your application which is firmly within your control and will be the most important factor - doing well on your interview.

of course you would - same goes for all aspects of the process really. One of the most stressful part of the process is how long it takes and how some much of it is hidden - even at a school that is as open with its admission policies as Western is (I mean it is incredibly open really).

the don't make a habit of reveling those details for staffing reasons and their obvious faith in their systems. Obsessive about their systems is probably a better word :)
