MedHopeful93
Hello, I was told that it is hard to get a job/ residency in Canada after completing an MD degree in the US, but the reverse is not true (i.e. it is easy to practice in the states with a Canadian MD degree). Does anyone know if this is true? Do US students have to take the Canadian equivalent of a board exam and re-do residency if they want to practice in Canada? Do Canadian residencies transfer to the US? Thanks!

Essentially the Canadian stance is that you need equivalent training, specifically in years. So if you wanted to come back, many US programs are 4 years in length and you should do a 1 year fellowship, as many Canadian programs are 5 years in length. I doubt the actual degree really makes any difference, but the US schools place a heavier emphasis on basic medical science (in part because that's what Step 1 is all about). I was told to be safe, to write both the US and Canadian licensing exams for whatever I go into. So I will probably do the MCCQE Part 1 in 4th year after Step 2 CS/CK.
