TheStrangerHasNoSongs
So obviously I understand that it is not a set process and other factors play into this, but I was wondering what people thought/knew about the amount of publications for premeds who get accepted to med school, and the equivalent process for residency matching. Obviously many factors come into play (ex. quality of journal, type of research, etc) but I was hoping to get a general idea to gauge better where i stand... Thanks in advance! Amanda Weinburg
I doubt many pre meds have any published papers, especially not 1st authors or anything, maybe 6th or 7th on a general lab paper. But you're right its not essential and but it does add oomph to your application
CardiacArrhythmia
Like the above replier, I doubt many undergrads have published papers that list them as a first or second author. You also have to take in the account the discipline of the research project.Based on a small cohort of friends (who are in med school/applying to med school from undergrad), I am the only one with a first author pub, and it took me 2 years in my undergrad to complete the project, write the manuscript and submit it. Curiousaboutapps1
I don't have any publications and was accepted to MD/PhD, so evidently it wasn't that big of a deal. I do have a number of conference presentations though. Most people that I know that have gotten in do not have publications. It's incredibly hard to do this in undergrad. MedOncologista
I'm a fairly newly minted specialist physician, and I didn't really get into research or publish much until I was well into my specialty training. Many students/residents delve into research earlier, but there truly is no set course. If research truly is a future interest of yours, then you should definitely highlight that in you applications/interviews even if you don't have many publications. However, many physicians are solely interested in clinical medicine, and that's ok too! My advice would be to be honest and genuine about your interests, and that will serve you much better than a list of publications!
