Anyone Withdrawn From Nrmp Because Of Carms Yet?

Recommended Posts

I hear you. The wait is a killer. I looked at a few posts from last year's CaRMS and NRMP applicants and it looks like they'll only withdraw you after the Match is done on March 1st. Prior to 2013, the withdrawal happened about a week before Match day. Hope this helps!

Ah okay, I guess this confirms it then. I haven't seen people posting about early notifications since 2014.

I believe there were complains about it being released early back then (regardless of the reason).

The issue from the schools' point of view is that you want the match to be organized - as much as the wait is a killer (and yes it is) finding out you didn't match can be devastating, and they want system supports in place if it does occur. Very bad things can happen otherwise.

Yea, but presumably, given the opportunity to match to the US, you're not "unmatched" until you're officially unmatched in the US as well.

true but they still don't play games with it as much as possible. CARMS is a very stressful event as you know - you don't want any part of it to be random.

once when I was the class president of my year I found out all the match results from the people graduating a few years ahead of us when I went to drop off a cake our class arranged to celebrate. I didn't think much of learning that information - I mean world gets around pretty fast anyway and my intention was to truly drop off just the cake. I didn't know at the time how it worked, and the results were on the wall. At a glance I learned the entire result.

I decided to just announce it all to my class - they all wanted to know, and the information was correct, verified and again everyone would just find out shortly but with a ton of gossip and possible misinformation etc, etc. Plus we had a really high match result that year - something above 95% (I forget the exact number). I thought that would be really comforting for people to know and the news was not just good but great! We should all be celebrating.

My intentions I thought were good and the information valid. Still somehow just telling people the results well before they would even be near doing a match resulted in such stress and panic than several students visited our counseling office about it. I was extremely confused when I found out that. I know as well that there must have been more stressed that I don't know about.

I learned a lesson that day - CARMS is a nasty, nasty beast and you have to be extremely careful about it. Objectively the results are overall very good but lives are on the line and match day results in all kinds of dramatic events - relationships end, people are often sent away from friends and family, and in effect the class begins to break up on that day as we all look to the future and see ourselves elsewhere (you can almost feel the moment when everyone understands that). That is even for the people that actually match - let alone those that didn't (its own form of pain and suffering).  You have to look beyond just the match rates to understand all of that.

Did you get in trouble by telling people in advance? I hope you did not get flagged for professionalism.

Edit : I reread what you wrote. So, you just told that the match rate was 95% to your class (3 years away from being in the match process), and they went to the counselors for that because it stressed them out? It looks like I'm not getting something.

that is a good summary ha. The process is that stressful for people that even those not involved finding out that people didn't match into specialties (may those they are interested in) caused issues. Even though at that time they were no way involved and quite far away from CARMS.

I didn't get into any real trouble in the end :) To this day I am still shocked by the entire thing.
