U Of A Pt (Only) Interview Invitations 2017 (Acceptance/rejected/waitlisted)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I decided to start this thread to separate out U of A PT cause it is difficult to follow the other thread with all schools and OT and PT on the same thread. (although I do understand many people apply multiple places)

If you would like to use this thread or provide your stats, be my guest!

HopefulPT95, thanks for the reply! Some disadvantages I've heard about going on the second day include interviewer fatigue as well as they've likely already heard the response that you're going to give many times before. Of course, they're recruited and trained to give fair opinions though. Advantages I've heard are that you get more time to prepare, and what you mentioned, remembering what they heard last.

PT17, I am out of province with a GPA of 3.98 with an interview on May 5th. That is interesting that higher GPAs would get the first day, wouldn`t it be more advantageous to interview on the second day since people remember things that they heard last the most?

From my experiences with MMIs (I did one at the U of A but not for PT) they mark you right then and there so there is no remembering needed. Thus I don't think that the "people remember what they heard last the most" is relevant. Also the second day is almost a week after the first day so I don't think there will be interviewer fatigue either. As well, in a given day, the same interviewer hears the response to the same question over and over so that is unavoidable (in my other MMI interviewer A always asked question A and the interviewees rotated through the interviewers).

The only difference may be that the second day may not get an open house afterwards since it is a smaller group- but that is just speculation.

Hey YYC_PT2017 I just sent an email asking but I have no idea where I am sitting. I also got into OT with a sGPA of 3.87, what is your preference if you get in to both?! I am conflicted, shadowed with both and enjoy them both.

My first choice is PT, I am less familiar with the OT profession. I wonder when we have to confirm our acceptance to OT.. Ideally I would like to find out about the PT waitlist before we have to decide on OT haha.

Can you share your experiences shadowing an OT? I would love to know more about it before I make my decision!

Congratulations! Did UofA's OT give you a deadline to accept/decline offer?

No they haven't, in the email it said "In the coming week you will be sent an admission letter from the Department containing more details." Will post the date once they tell me!

I have shadowed both in hospital settings this is what I found. OT and PT overlap in some tasks. OT I found to be more about motor developmental milestones and doing tasks to test these things as well as practicing everyday tasks. PT has more of a diagnostic, anatomy and physiology emphasis but still has some aspects of testing motor testing etc while having more indirect treatments (not practicing the actual task but working on specific muscles to help with a task).

Awesome, OT can be hard to find placements to shadow for sure. I was lucky enough to have a pediatric placement during a practicum and I really enjoyed it. Basically for peds I got to see assessments of kindergarten students, the OT would evaluate which kiddos needed therapy. Later on we would go through activities to work on their various needs/occupational skills aka lots of work on handwriting, social skills, fine motor skills etc. The thing that I really enjoy about OT is the holistic nature of it by bringing in mental health. I definitely have less experience compared to probably many people on this forum because I only shadowed one place. Hopefully that is helpful but feel free to PM me for any other kind of questions if you want :)

Does anyone have info on how many people have been accepted typically off the UofA PT waitlist in the past? Trying to gauge what my chances are sitting around 20ish I know anything can happen but just want to be realistic.  Thanks

I called because I'm in the same boat... She said they usually go through about 10-20 people

Seems like PT goes through much less people on the waitlist than OT. Some applicants apply to both OT and PT. Once they make a decision then there are movements. I'm sure once Ontario releases their decisions on the 19th, there will be more movements. All the best everyone.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted! And for those who are on the waitlist, I got accepted into PT at UofA Edmonton campus. I am out of province (from Ontario) so if I get into an Ontario school I will likely choose that over Alberta so I agree that there will at least be some more movement after May 19th whether it is from me or another applicant.
